Job summary

Clancy is seeking a Competency Authorising Officer to join the Energy team on permanent basis. The role focuses on ensuring contractor competence for SSEN works 11kV–132kV and involves independent decision-making with safety as a priority.

The ideal candidate has significant UK electricity distribution experience, strong HV/EHV knowledge, and a recognised electrical qualification. A full UK driving licence is required, and experience with contractor assurance models is advantageous.

Qualifications

• Significant experience working in UK electricity distribution networks.
• Strong understanding of Distribution Safety Rules, Permit to Work systems, and HV/EHV operational protocols.
• Experience in roles such as Senior Authorised Person (SAP), Authorising Officer, Electrical Safety Manager, or Commissioning Manager/Lead Engineer.
• Recognised electrical qualification or equivalent industry route.
• Full UK Driving licence.
• High Voltage (HV) operational experience appropriate to distribution environments.

Responsibilities

• Assess contractor personnel against defined competency criteria, including technical knowledge and experience.
• Conduct structured assessments using interviews, scenario questioning, and evidence review.
• Verify candidate evidence such as training records, authorisations, logbooks and experience records.
• Produce and sign a Contractor Competence Assurance Statement for each candidate.
• Maintain contractor competency matrices and role profiles with appropriate reassessment where needed.
• Operate independently from programme and commercial pressures to ensure consistency and fairness in competence decisions.
• Maintain strong communication and collaboration with SSEN Authorising Officers, Operational Safety teams, and Project & Delivery Managers.
