Job summary

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust invites applications for Maternity Support Workers in the University Hospital Lewisham Birth Centre. You will support women/birthing people and families in a home-from-home environment, working with a multi-professional team.

Experience in maternity or paediatric care is preferred, with the ability to work independently and provide breast feeding support within national and trust guidelines.

Qualifications

• Have previous maternity/ paediatric experience of at least 1 year (NOT work experience).
• Be able to work independently providing care for low-risk women/birthing people.
• Be able to perform neonatal observations and recognise deviations from normal.
• Be competent in providing breast feeding support.
• Be keen to be part of a family-focused maternity team.
• Be aware of clinical guidelines and best practices in the Birth Centre.

Responsibilities

• Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in clinical areas including delivery rooms, theatre, equipment, beds and stock.
• Assist the midwives in care antenatally, during labour and postnatally.
• Provide 24-hour cover for the unit with flexibility to move within team areas.
• Support clients with general personal hygiene needs as required.
• Assist in providing food and drink if required.
• Observe and report deviations in wellbeing of women/birthing people and babies.
• Provide parenting advice within your knowledge about baby's wellbeing and safety.
• Support feeding of babies and give advice per guidelines.
• Maintain accurate records in clinical records.
• Escort patients to different clinical areas within the unit.
• Be asked to complete neonatal observations as required.
• Be available to act as a chaperone when needed.
