Role Purpose

The purpose of the Profitability Assistant Accountant is to support the Company Owned Profitability Manager enhancing the profitability of the stores. This will be achieved by supporting the Profitability Manager in stock loss review, procurement projects and other cost saving projects.

Role Scope

This role will act as a support to the Company Owned Profitability Manager and Commercial Manager to drive the Company Owned business forward, as well providing value add support to financial and management reporting. The Company Owned Estate comprises 43 stores (as of September 2025), made up of 23 SuperValu stores and 20 Centra stores.

The Profitability Assistant Accountant will be both office and field-based with specific requirement to attend stores on an ongoing basis in order to assist with commercial analysis.

What you'll be doing
  • The review, benchmarking and budgeting of gross margin.
  • Reviewing fuel margin on a daily basis with stores to ensure the maximisation of profit.
  • Assisting with key procurement projects. This will include liaising with other Musgrave divisions to utilise existing contractual positions where possible.
  • To contribute to the preparation of capital expenditure proposals for impending store refurbishments.
  • Assisting with payroll benchmarking in conjunction with Operations.
  • Maintaining a contracts database and using this to identify opportunities for savings.
  • Reviewing spend on goods not for resale areas to identify lowest cost savings.
  • Contribute to business cases for the refurbishment of existing stores, this will include reporting on their performance versus targets.
  • Monthly review of electricity usage.
  • Contribute to the development of reporting and financial assessment in the Company Owned estate that adds value and improves bottom line profit. Support on Commercial Efficiency Projects such as Electronic Labels and Fuel Management Software.
  • Supporting on the completion and review of quarterly stock counts. This will be involved occasionally working outside normal business hours and including weekends.
  • The investigation and understanding of stock loss variances across the Company Owned estate.
  • Other projects and ad-hoc work as required.
Measures
  • Improvement in stock reporting and reductions in stock loss.
  • Accurate and timely roll out of key procurement projects; including significant cost savings.
  • Timely completion of key business cases.
  • Improvements in Gross Margin.
  • Enhanced profitability for Company Owned and individual stores.
What we're looking for
  • Part Qualified Accountant studying for membership of a professional body e.g. ACA / ACCA / CIMA
  • Demonstrable evidence of preparing and presenting analysis to a high standard and to finance/non-finance people.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong initiative and an achievement orientated approach to results.
  • Full driving licence and access to vehicle with insurance to cover business use.
  • Inquisitive, open to new ideas and an ability to engage fully with all business operations.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Business Degree/diploma.
  • Accounting experience in the Retail/Wholesale sector.
  • Good commercial experience, particularly in the preparation and presentation of reports and analysis.
  • Experience of being involved in procurement projects and obtaining lowest cost solutions.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced commercial environment.
  • Exposure to financial systems such as Oracle and NAV.
  • Knowledge of the FMCG industry.
  • Highly systems oriented and literate.
