Looking for a role that is fun, different and varied?
Are you passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning and achieve their potential? We’re looking for a resilient, adaptable, and proactive Community Teaching Assistant to provide tailored support for pupils with complex behavioural and learning needs. This is a unique role where you will work not only in school settings but also across local learning hubs, community spaces, and occasionally in pupils’ homes to deliver personalised, focused learning and behavioural support.
Pay: £14.25 (contracts available)
Contract: Full-time, fixed term for 39 weeks per year
Start Date: Immediate start available
Location: Chesterfield and surrounding areas
Positions: Multiple openings
You will be working in an Alternative Provision environment that supports children and young people who have experienced permanent exclusion, are at risk of exclusion, or whose education has been significantly disrupted. Many pupils have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, which may include difficulties with emotional regulation, impulse control, and social interaction. Others may struggle with attendance, engagement, or gaps in their literacy and numeracy skills due to disrupted schooling.
The pupils you’ll work with often present with a wide range of challenging behaviours, from emotional volatility and anxiety to withdrawn or avoidant behaviour. Many require specialist strategies to help them re-engage with learning, build positive relationships, and develop the skills to manage their emotions more effectively.
Your role is to act as a calm, consistent presence, using behaviour support strategies to de-escalate difficult situations and encourage positive choices. Beyond behaviour management, you’ll also play a part in helping pupils rebuild confidence, improve resilience, and prepare for reintegration into mainstream education or a positive next step, whether that’s further education, training, or employment.
As a Community Teaching Assistant, you’ll play a vital role in providing 1:1 or small group support, wherever it’s needed — this could mean working on-site, at community learning hubs, or even at a pupil’s home. You’ll encourage engagement through both academic support and enrichment activities, such as sports and outdoor learning, which are central to building resilience, confidence, and positive relationships.
We are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All staff will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check and uphold the highest safeguarding standards at all times.
