Job description

In recent years we have developed a team of GPs that provide medical cover to our community hospital wards across Oxfordshire. Our GPs are thriving, thoroughly enjoying their role in these settings and working as part of a highly effective multi-disciplinary team.

We now require further sessional (bank) GPs to provide additional medical cover to the wards during periods of increased demand, cover annual leave and other circumstances when additional medical cover may be required.

Primarily to support the wards with medical cover at the following locations: Bicester, Oxford, Wallingford and Didcot. There may also be opportunities to work with and support the medical teams on our community wards based in Abingdon and Witney. On any given day, you would only be required to provide face-to-face medical support for up to two wards. On rare occasions, you may be asked to provide senior medical decision-making support to our experienced ACPs at other sites.

The patients you would be caring for are receiving ‘step down’ nursing care and rehabilitation following an admission in secondary care or ‘step up’ care from the community. Occasionally some patients require palliative care. Work will be a combination of ward-based work, ward MDTs, and phone/remote support. Training for successful GP applicants will be provided as needed on an individual basis.

Oxford Health provides a comprehensive range of physical, mental health and social care services to the populations of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath and North East Somerset. In Oxfordshire, we are the main provider of community health services and deliver these in a range of community and in-patient settings including eight community hospitals and a Hospital at Home Team.

Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust is a core partner of the Oxford Academic Health Sciences Centre. Research activity is a top priority for the Trust alongside high-quality service provision and education and training. Jointly with the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, Oxford Health hosts a NIHR-funded Clinical Research Facility and a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC).

Depending on the site and day of the week, we can offer ad hoc or block bookings for 3-6 months in advance. There may also be opportunities in the future for individuals to take on substantive roles as a community hospital GP.

This is a great opportunity for GPs interested in care of the elderly to work within a well-established and supportive team. It will also supplement and provide an additional work opportunity for those GPs with portfolio careers.
