Job summary

Would you like to work for a supportive, person-centred service that offers multiple opportunities for professional training and development and provides an excellent service to clients?

If so, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Community Mental Health Nurse to join the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent NHS Talking Therapies for Anxiety and Depression, to provide psychological assessment and treatment for clients with a wide range of mental health problems suitable for treatment within primary care.

Band 6, £35,392 - £42,618 per annum.

Maternity Cover Part Time - 27.5 hours per week.

We are a friendly and welcoming NHS service in North Staffordshire, offering assessment and treatment for the population of Newcastle under Lyme and the North Staffordshire Moorlands locality.

We value our team members and hold regular monthly team meetings and wellbeing initiatives, providing opportunities for staff to support each other. We also have staff wellbeing champions dedicated to fostering this supportive ethos.

You will receive specialist in-house clinical skills training to provide structured, problem-focused assessments, and to explain evidence-based models of psychological therapies for specific anxiety disorders and depression, in adherence with NICE guidelines.

Main duties of the job

As a Community Mental Health Nurse, you will play a central role in supporting the service by screening new referrals via our self-referral telephone helpline/web referral facility, delivering 1-2 assessments per month, making decisions on suitability and allocation, providing psycho-education, and signposting/referring clients to partner services as appropriate.

You will work alongside NHS psychological therapists, and apart from delivering assessments and screening new referrals, will independently manage a caseload of clients for treatment/support who do not meet the criteria for NHS Talking Therapies structured psychological treatment but whose needs can be managed in primary care.

There is a comprehensive care pathway within the service focusing on Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) skills. The Community Mental Health Nurses can offer this intervention both on a 1:1 basis and within a group workshop setting recently developed within the service.

About us

North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust is a leading provider of mental health, social care, learning disability, and substance misuse services in the West Midlands.

We are a forward-thinking Trust, proudly awarded the highest rating of "Outstanding" from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), one of only two specialist Mental Health Trusts in England with this rating.

We also won the 'Trust of the Year' award at the NHS Journal Awards 2022, the only mental health Trust to have achieved this so far.

Our vision is 'To be Outstanding in all we do and how we do it'. As a 'Disability Confident Employer', we are committed to fostering an inclusive culture. Our teams pride themselves on compassion, teamwork, and resilience.

Job responsibilities

We are a multidisciplinary team including CBT Therapists, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners, Interpersonal Therapists, Counsellors, and Community Mental Health Nurses. We are committed to staff development, and these roles offer excellent opportunities for career advancement within our Talking Therapies service, located in some of the most beautiful areas of the Peak District National Park.

Applicants should have a core RMN qualification and post-qualification experience, ideally in both inpatient and community settings, though this is not essential.

The post-holder will offer 1:1 treatment interventions to clients with various symptoms and difficulties, including Eating Disorders, Low Self-Esteem, Emotional Dysregulation, Depression, and Anxiety.

They will work with clients who may present with increased risk, ensuring safety and supporting the development of Safety Plans, with referrals to Crisis Services as needed.

The caseload will involve weekly treatment appointments, providing evidence-based therapeutic interventions and helping clients develop skills to manage and improve their wellbeing.

In addition to 1:1 sessions, the post-holder will collaborate with CPN colleagues to deliver online group workshops focusing on Emotional Regulation skills.

Knowledge of CBT principles in treating anxiety and depression would be advantageous.

Further training opportunities are available for team members interested in developing other evidence-based therapeutic interventions in primary care mental health.

As the service is based in Newcastle Under Lyme, Stoke on Trent, and the wider North Staffordshire and Leek Moorlands areas, some travel between sites is required, so a driving license is beneficial.

We offer flexible remote working options, but candidates must be able to conduct face-to-face appointments at our current bases within North Staffordshire and the Moorlands.
