Overview

We are seeking a passionate, innovative and motivated Speech and Language Therapist to join our Children\'s Speech and Language Therapy Team in North Cumbria. The team provides a service to the East of the Cumberland district. The role supports the development and delivery of the targeted and universal levels of the speech and language therapy service in line with current commissioning requirements. The post involves collaborating with interagency partners to ensure children have appropriate language and communication opportunities to reach their outcomes, sharing expertise, and modelling best practice with colleagues, families and practitioners. It also includes auditing and reviewing outcomes for stakeholders and children accessing service levels and undertaking holistic assessments to understand the functional impact of speech, language or communication needs.

Responsibilities

In line with service demand, assume responsibility and accountability for a caseload of children and/or young people with diverse presentations, prioritising and managing the caseload independently.

In collaboration with the Band & Universal and Targeted Lead SLT, contribute to the delivery of universal and targeted speech and language therapy services. This will include:

• Identifying and utilising outcome measures in partnership with Universal SLT colleagues across the county and the management team to measure impact.
• Delivering and reinforcing key universal messages to families and practitioners to help develop children\'s communication skills.
• Planning and delivering training across the children\'s workforce to develop awareness of the importance of communication skills for every child.
• Raising quality of provision in early years settings to support communication.
• Developing and reviewing referral criteria, pathways and screening tools.
• Supporting work at the pre-referral stage (e.g. triage function, health promotion and education, expectations of referrers).
• Raising awareness of the universal speech and language therapy role/service and promoting its timely, safe, proximal-to-the-child response.
• Contributing to relevant joint strategy development and establishing targeted level offers.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent qualification in Speech and Language Therapy approved by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
• HCPC registration.
• Ongoing RCSLT membership.

Desirable:

• Advanced postgraduate training in the field; membership of specialist interest groups; Elklan, Hanen, PECS.

Experience

• Essential: Postgraduate experience; experience delivering training to others; experience implementing service development initiatives; experience working in diverse community settings.
• Desirable: Leadership training; audit experience.

Knowledge

• Essential: Specialist knowledge across the full range of work procedures, current national/local strategies, guidelines and legislation for early years and school-aged populations; knowledge of a broad range of specialist assessments; understanding of other professionals\' roles.
• Desirable: The Balanced System training; TOMs.

Skills and Aptitudes

• Highly developed skills for precise phonemic transcription and signing; advanced auditory, perceptual and observational skills; ability to communicate complex information effectively and negotiate with families and other agencies.
