Community Engineer (multiple roles and seniority levels)

We are building community management at scale with multiple positions available at different seniority levels.

The role of a Community Engineer

The Community team at Canonical enables community leaders and participants to get things done by coordinating with Canonical teams and ensuring efficient community processes. We facilitate community work to help energetic contributors bring their vision of open source into reality, aligning with Canonical's goals. You will design, execute, and scale initiatives that foster a thriving community.

This role is ideal for someone passionate about open source software, Linux, and sustainable community building. You will support community initiatives with your technical and organizational skills, work closely with developers, and help create new technical projects that enhance the community experience. You will lead multidisciplinary programs from conception to launch, collaborating with Developer Relations, technical authors, product managers, marketing, engineering teams, and external partners.

You will engage with volunteer developers, address their concerns, and support their success and sustainability of projects. You will also provide content and technical support to keep the community engaged and informed through blogs, social media, and events. Representing Ubuntu and Canonical at conferences and expos will be part of your role.

Location: These are fully remote roles, open worldwide.

What your day will look like
  • Create high-quality content promoting community initiatives
  • Collaborate on solutions to community problems
  • Work remotely with occasional travel (2-4 weeks/year) for events
  • Nurture community contributions to Ubuntu
  • Engage with the Ubuntu community via Discourse, Matrix, social media, and conferences
  • Represent Ubuntu at speaking engagements
  • Support Canonical teams' engagement in the open source ecosystem

  • Experience with developer tools and open source projects
  • Public record of accomplishments (talks, blogs, GitHub, X)
  • Interest/experience in Ubuntu Linux, DevOps, software development, testing, QA, package management, containers
  • Ability to work independently and own objectives
  • Flexible with time and eager to work with new technology in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with open source communities and volunteer workflows
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with program management experience
