Job description

The role of a Community Engineer at Canonical

The Ubuntu Community team at Canonical enables community leaders and participants to get things done in the project, coordinating with Canonical teams and ensuring that community processes are efficient and well run. We facilitate community work to ensure energetic and ambitious community members can benefit from Canonical's efforts and bring their own Ubuntu visions to life, meeting community needs and interests.

This role is ideal for a technically proficient individual passionate about open source software, Linux, and sustainable community building.

Responsibilities include supporting community initiatives with technical and organizational skills, collaborating with developers to streamline processes, fostering new technical projects, and representing community interests to Canonical teams.

You will engage with volunteer developers, address their concerns, and help them create successful tools, ensuring project autonomy and sustainability. The role requires experience in DevOps, Software Development, Testing or QA, package management, container technology, and strong Linux skills.

You will also provide content and technical support to keep the community engaged through blogs, social media, and events, and represent Ubuntu and Canonical at conferences and expos.

Location

This is a globally remote role.

What your day will look like
  1. Collaborate proactively with a distributed team
  2. Create high-quality content to promote community initiatives
  3. Discuss ideas and collaborate on community solutions
  4. Work from home with 2 to 4 weeks of travel for events, with potential for more
  5. Nurture community contributions to Ubuntu
  6. Engage with the community via AskUbuntu, IRC, social media, and conferences
  7. Represent Ubuntu through speaking engagements at events
What we are looking for in you
  • A passion for technology and collaboration with talented people
  • Curiosity, flexibility, articulation, and accountability
  • Soft skills, passion, initiative, thoughtfulness, and self-motivation
  • Experience with developer tools and open source projects
  • A public record of accomplishments (talks, blogs, GitHub, Twitter, etc.)
  • Interest and experience with at least two of: Ubuntu Linux (kernel or userspace), DevOps, software development, testing/QA, package management, container tech
  • Ability to work independently and own objectives
  • Flexibility and enthusiasm for working with new technology in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with open source communities and understanding volunteer workflows
