Job description

Community Archaeologist

Role Responsibility

A dedicated and enthusiastic individual is sought to join the Heritage Conservation team to carry out an exciting community archaeology projects. The 'Whose Hoo' project (three days a week, 36 months, fixed-term) is a wide-ranging National Lottery Heritage Fund supported community project on the Hoo Peninsula in Medway. As part of the wider project you will prepare and carry out four heritage projects - The Second World War Stop Line on the Hoo Peninsula, the Defences of the Hoo Peninsula, Industries of the Hoo Peninsula and the Archaeology of the Hoo Peninsula. You will be based in Kent County Council's offices in Maidstone for this project, although most staff work flexibly with both home and office working, and you will also spend much time on the Hoo Peninsula. You will engage the local community, recruit a team of volunteers and train and support them to carry out a range of field and desk-based activities including archive and map research, geophysics and field-walking, walkover survey, test-pitting and excavation.

You will have a degree in archaeology or a related subject, or equivalent relevant expertise. You will be able to develop and implement community archaeology projects and have expertise in field archaeology to at least senior supervisor level. You will have good team-working, communication and interpersonal skills, a disciplined approach to work, good time-management skills and the ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines. The project will involve significant weekend and some evening work.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification
