Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a senior qualified health or social care professional to join our dynamic Children & Young People’s Mental Health Learning Disability service. The post is based in Maidstone or Canterbury CYPMHS, but we offer LD services across Kent & Medway, incorporating a range of town and rural communities, each with their own demographic needs.

Main duties of the job

The service provides evidence-based NICE recommended positive behavioural support & other psychosocial interventions to children, young people, their families & networks. You will be a motivated & compassionate individual with clinical experience working with children & young people with a diagnosis of moderate to severe & profound learning disability, alongside behaviour that challenges/other mental health difficulties and neurodiversity.

Most of the clinical work with this group is with the families & networks around the child rather than the child themselves, using a positive behavioural approach, systemic interventions & other psychological approaches. Safeguarding is a high priority with this vulnerable client group.

Starting with NELFT

NELFT places a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks, including mandatory training, systems training, and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process, new starters will have the opportunity to meet the executive team, senior managers, and attend drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing, and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To assess and develop plans of evidence-based care that meet the complex needs of the young people referred to the LD service.

To manage safety & develop positive behaviour support plans for reducing distress & behaviours of concern such as self-injury or physical behaviours to others.

To work with families & networks such as schools, social care & care providers to holistically assess the functions of behaviour and share strategies across the network. This may include workshops & group work.

To hold a caseload of young people/families with complex needs related to Learning Disability, Behaviours of Concern & other emotional/mental health challenges.

Close working relationships with team members and partnership agencies like Social Services, Education, and others are essential.

You must demonstrate an interest in multi-agency and multi-disciplinary work and be familiar with evidence-based practices in children’s mental health. There are excellent opportunities for CPD, in-service teaching, and supervision within the team and the Trust.

You will need to complete Routine Outcome Measures in line with the principles of the national CYP-IAPT programme (Children and Young People’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies).

You must be able to work independently and have good clinical/therapeutic and case management skills to engage families.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of graduate training (nursing, social work, Occupational therapy) and substantial CAMHS clinical experience.

Qualifications

• Further postgraduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice, and/or research design and analysis.

Experience

• Experience working with difficult, disturbed, or challenging children/young people requiring skilled and complex interventions.

Experience

• Work with people with Moderate to Severe Learning Disabilities.
• Minimum of 3-5 years post-qualification experience in CAMHS or equivalent settings with complex cases.
