Job description

Purpose of the Role

The Communications Specialist supports the delivery of engaging external communications that build our reputation and bring our story to life.

With a particular focus on external communications, the role is hands‑on across content creation, media relations, social media, website content, campaigns and events. It also works across the wider Corporate Communications team, helping stories reach the audiences and channels where they will have the greatest impact.

It is a varied role for someone who enjoys finding a good story, creating great content and then thinking beyond the original brief: if something is worth sharing externally, how could we bring it to life for our people too? And if there is a brilliant story happening internally, how could we share it with the outside world?

The position is based in Abingdon and requires travel to Somerset (regularly).

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Manage day‑to‑day content across all channels.
  • Find, develop and create engaging stories about our business, people, technology, communities and progress.

  • Monitor media coverage and external conversations relevant to the business.

  • Develop social copy and coordinate supporting photography, video and creative assets.
  • Maintain and update website content, working with internal stakeholders and external partners where appropriate.

Campaigns, recruitment and events
  • Support integrated external communications and recruitment campaigns across organic, paid social, print and other channels.
  • Coordinate content and communications around external events, partnerships and business milestones.

  • Help colleagues create communications that feel clear, engaging and recognisably ours.

Working across Corporate Communications
  • Bring an external perspective to wider Corporate Communications activity while being ready to support across the team’s priorities.
  • Look for opportunities to reuse, reshape and amplify good content across internal and external audiences, rather than creating communications in isolation.
  • Work closely with internal communications colleagues so employees are considered as an important audience for major external stories and announcements.
  • Support wider team projects, campaigns and events as priorities require.
Experience and Skills
  • Experience in communications, PR, content, social media, journalism or a related area.
