Job Description:

Our client is a very successful international Energy Trading company with access to all key markets worldwide…

The role sits within the Legal and Compliance team with a focus on the preparation, review, negotiation, documentation, and conclusion of commodity contracts as well as freight charterparties.

Our client enters into a large number of contracts for physical commodities. These contracts range from individual spot cargo transactions to more complex structured deals. The commercial and operational terms of these contracts are managed via counterparty-specific Master Agreements, Long-Form Agreements, or industry-agreed Standard Master Agreements.

Increased volume of business for the physical trading teams means that they currently have a requirement for an experienced Contracts Specialist to join the team. This role offers an excellent opportunity to further develop skills and responsibility within a growing and successful commodity trading business.

Key Role Responsibilities
  • Draft, review, and negotiate trading contracts for physical energy deals to reflect both the commercial terms agreed with external and internal counterparties and the relevant counterparty agreement. These confirms will cover deals originated in both the Asia Pacific and Europe.
  • Work with the Trading teams and various internal functions to manage the counterparty physical contract workflow process from deal execution to final signature in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Review all commodity contracts and ensure details match our internal reporting systems as well as the deal recaps.
  • Work closely with the legal team on any legal or compliance issues arising during negotiations on the trading contracts.
Key Qualifications and Experience
  • 1 to 5 years’ experience working in a physical energy trading environment with direct responsibility for physical cargo confirmation drafting.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a physical energy trading environment with significant exposure to trading contracts review, drafting, and negotiation.
  • Significant physical energy cargo confirmation drafting experience and a thorough understanding of the physical contract transaction cycle.
  • Familiarity with various legal contractual forms (including shipping) associated with trading physical cargoes.
  • Familiarity with Incoterms, physical trading, and shipping terms e.g., demurrage, dispatch, and common trading/shipping acronyms.
  • Experience working directly with trading, legal, and support functions within a physical energy trading company.
Candidate Profile
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to communicate effectively with internal stakeholders at all levels as well as external counterparty representatives.
  • Must be detail-oriented, productive, and efficient.
  • Must be well-organized and comfortable working in a sometimes stressful and demanding work environment.
