Reporting to the Vice President, Market Research & Economic Analysis, the Commodities Economist will support in providing insights, reporting and forward-looking recommendations on macroeconomic and industry trends related to metals & mining. In addition, the Commodities Economist will support internal and external reporting related to Teck’s commercial operations and assist with strategic planning and thematic scenario analysis.

Responsibilities

  1. Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  2. Maintain macroeconomic data and produce related statistical analysis, charts and graphs pertinent to Teck’s business
  3. Provide timely and strategic economic analysis for Teck’s Commercial, Finance and Operational groups
  4. Play a key role in strategic planning for Teck’s Commercial business, with a particular focus on longer-term economic trends impacting commodity markets
  5. Support Business Development projects on an ad-hoc basis
  6. Assist in the preparation of periodic reports, both internal and external
  7. Develop and maintain external relationships with third party research and data providers
  8. Support the VP, Market Research & Economic Analysis in developing strategic market narratives and reports related to Teck’s products
  9. Undertake special projects and assignments at the direction of the VP, Market Research & Economic Analysis

Qualifications
  1. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a commercial environment
  2. A university degree in Economics or Business Management, or practical experience in a commercial economics role
  3. High-level communication skills with proficiency in spoken and written English
  4. Excellent analytical and numeracy skills
  5. A deadline-orientated approach to projects
  6. Understanding of base metal trade flows
  7. Knowledge of key industrial economy indicators, particularly in China
  8. Ability to work with multiple complex information sources and quickly identify important data points and narratives
  9. A positive approach with a focus on continuous improvement for people and processes
  10. A strong desire to produce outstanding analysis
  11. Previous work experience in metals and mining company would be considered a plus
