Job description

At Sellafield Ltd, we are harnessing our expertise; bringing together world-class skills and innovative technology to solve complex nuclear, infrastructure, and engineering challenges. By joining Sellafield Ltd, you join an amazing team of people, from all walks of life, where you can thrive in a connected, considerate culture of innovation, collaboration, and community; and play a significant part in the UK’s sustainable nuclear future.

Are you passionate about ensuring new facilities, equipment, and systems are safe, practical, and ready for real-world operation?

We’re looking for a Commissioning Operability Team Member to play a key role in bridging the gap between project delivery and operational excellence. You’ll work closely with project teams, engineers, operators, and maintenance personnel to ensure new assets are designed, commissioned, and handed over with the end user firmly in mind.

This is an exciting opportunity to influence projects from development through to operational readiness, ensuring that people, processes, training, and documentation are in place to support safe and efficient operations from day one.

What You’ll Do

As a Commissioning Operability Team Member, you will:

Support Operational Readiness
  • Represent operations and maintenance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support the transition of facilities and systems from project delivery into routine operations.
Develop Procedures and Documentation
  • Produce clear and effective operating and maintenance instructions.
  • Review and validate procedures to ensure they are practical, accurate, and user-friendly.
  • Develop guidance covering routine operations, alarms, maintenance activities, and emergency response.
Support Training and Knowledge Transfer
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of training materials and programmes.
  • Share technical expertise and operational best practice across project and operational teams.
  • Provide specialist advice and support as a subject matter expert where required.
Champion Safety and Performance
  • Promote a positive and balanced safety culture.
  • Support assessments that consider the interaction between people, equipment, and processes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve safety, reliability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
Collaborate Across Teams
  • Work closely with engineers, project teams, operators, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Deliver operational readiness activities across a diverse portfolio of projects.
  • Complete assigned work packages safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.
Who We’re Looking For

You’ll be someone who can look beyond the design stage and understand how systems and facilities will function in the real world.

  • A strong understanding of operational and maintenance requirements.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • The ability to build effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
  • A proactive and organised approach to delivering high-quality outcomes.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • A practical mindset with the ability to balance safety, operational needs, and efficiency.
Essential Qualifications and Experience

You should hold:

  • A Level 3 qualification supported by significant relevant experience; or
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status; or
  • An HND or equivalent Level 5 qualification in a relevant technical discipline.

You will also have:

  • Experience working in an operational, engineering, technical, or maintenance environment.
  • Experience producing, reviewing, or using technical procedures and documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable Experience

  • Operational readiness, commissioning, or facility start-up experience.
  • Knowledge of human factors, training programmes, operations, or maintenance planning.
  • Experience supporting the handover of facilities or systems into operational use.

Please note: As a minimum, SC security clearance is required for these roles with the possibility of DV clearance being required in some areas. The roles are full-time, part-time working is not available.

The success of any new facility depends on more than great engineering. It requires equipment, processes, and people to be fully prepared for safe and effective operation.
