Qualifications

  • Experience in resource planning, workforce management and development.
  • Ability to coach, mentor and develop engineers.

The Opportunity

Hitachi Energy is seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineering Manager to lead and develop our UK-based Commissioning Engineering organisation, supporting the successful delivery of major HVDC, High Voltage (HV), Substation, and Grid Integration projects. This is a people leadership role focused on building organisational capability, developing engineering talent, and ensuring the availability of skilled commissioning resources to support project execution, tendering activities, and future business growth. Working closely with Project Commissioning Managers, Project Directors, Engineering, Construction, and Operations teams, you will play a key role in delivering critical energy infrastructure projects that support the transition to a more sustainable and reliable power network. This position offers the opportunity to shape the future of the commissioning function in the UK while leading a team of highly skilled engineers working on some of the industry's most complex and innovative projects.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Lead, manage, and develop the UK-based Commissioning Engineering team.
  • Act as the functional line manager for Commissioning Engineers, conducting performance reviews, development discussions, and career planning activities.
  • Create and maintain individual development plans and support succession planning across the organisation.
  • Foster a culture of mentoring, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
  • Promote employee engagement, wellbeing, inclusion, and retention.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and integration of new employees.
  • Ensure the availability of competent commissioning resources to meet project delivery and tendering requirements.
  • Collaborate with Project Commissioning Managers and project leadership teams to forecast resource needs and support business growth.
  • Identify capability gaps and support the ongoing development of commissioning competencies across the organisation.
  • Champion a strong safety culture and high standards of commissioning excellence.
Background and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Significant experience within commissioning, energisation, construction, project delivery, or operations environments.
  • Proven leadership experience managing and developing technical engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of HVDC, High Voltage, Substation, Transmission & Distribution, or Grid Integration projects.
  • Experience in resource planning, workforce management, and organisational development.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop engineering professionals.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to build effective relationships across multiple functions and levels of the organisation.
  • Experience working within complex project environments and matrix organisations.
