Transport Services manages the maintenance and repair of the council’s vehicle fleet, plant, and equipment, ensuring compliance with legal regulations, hire company standards, and manufacturer guidelines. The Commercial Vehicle Technician (Level 3) supports the Workshop Manager by maintaining the Council’s fleet, including third-party and plant maintenance, ensuring processes are carried out effectively to meet service obligations, legislative, and health safety standards in a timely and cost-effective manner.
Our workshop at Oakleigh Depot maintains a large fleet of service vehicles and plant used for frontline services such as recycling, waste collection, street cleansing, ground maintenance, and passenger services. We service vehicles like RCVs and vans up to and above VOSA standards. Vehicle technicians are expected to assist in delivering an efficient and effective Transport Workshop service safely, ensuring fleet is maintained in a legal and roadworthy condition, and fostering continuous improvement and a ‘right first time’ culture.
Applicants must have City and Guilds and IMI qualifications. Experience in maintaining commercial LGV and plant is essential, as well as experience with Mercedes and Dennis vehicles and buses. An up-to-date MOT test qualification and the ability to drive class 2 vehicles are required. The role involves representing the Council professionally, requiring courteous and helpful behavior at all times. Flexibility to work shifts as required by service needs is also necessary.
Professional Membership/Qualifications include:
- NVQ 3 or IMI 3 Heavy Motor Vehicle qualification or equivalent
- Qualified Commercial Vehicle Inspector (VOSA accreditation)
- At least GCSE level education including English and Maths or demonstrable relevant experience
