Institutional Credit Management (ICM)
Institutional Credit Management (ICM) provides integrated “end‑to‑end” credit underwriting, identification, measurement, management, and monitoring for wholesale credit risk across the enterprise. Within ICM, the Credit Underwriting function (ICM‑UW) provides analysis, underwriting, first‑line‑of‑defense credit approval, and subsequent credit monitoring.
The Underwriter
The Underwriter is a seasoned professional role.
Responsibilities
- Applies in‑depth disciplinary knowledge, contributing to the development of new techniques and the improvement of processes and workflow for the area or function.
- Integrates subject matter and industry expertise within a defined area.
- Requires in‑depth understanding of how areas collectively integrate within the sub‑function as well as coordinate and contribute to the objectives of the function and overall business.
- Evaluates moderately complex and variable issues with substantial potential impact, selecting an approach by weighing alternatives and balancing potentially conflicting situations using multiple sources of information.
- Requires good analytical skills in order to filter, prioritize, and validate potentially complex and dynamic material from multiple sources.
- Strong communication and diplomacy skills are required.
- Significant impact in terms of project size, geography, etc. by influencing decisions through advice, counsel, and/or facilitating services to others in the area of specialization.
- Work and performance of all teams in the area are directly affected by the performance of the individual.
- Ensures Credit Approval Memo (CAM) packages are complete, accurate, and thoroughly documented.
- Supports Senior Underwriters in making recommendations/credit decisions, including risk ratings and regulatory classifications.
- Conducts in‑depth analyses of financial data and other information provided by the client.
- Conducts projection modeling, stress testing, and other analyses using research and evaluations from a wide variety of sources.
- Assess deal strengths and weaknesses and risk factors.
- Ensures all transactions are in compliance with regulatory and Citi guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Remains current on all aspects of the credit relationship, including exposure, compliance, and potential credit concerns.
- Oversees periodic relationship credit monitoring including Annual Reviews (ARs), Quarterly Reviews (QRs), and Criticized Credit Reviews (CCRs).
- Notifies bankers of any deterioration in operating performance based on financial reporting.
- Supports the Senior Underwriter and Underwriter during internal reviews (BICR, COBRA, IA) and external regulatory exam responses.
- Expected to be fully conversant on safe and sound risk practices within Real Estate Credit including all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their portfolio.
Qualifications
- Relevant experience in underwriting.
- Previous experience working directly in Commercial Real Estate underwriting or credit, preferably in the financial services industry.
- Ability to apply credit and risk principles toward business goals.
- Demonstrated ability to synthesize, prioritize, and drive results with a high sense of urgency.
- Must be highly organized and able to work in a fast‑paced environment managing multiple projects and possess effective interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills.
- Solid organizational skills with ability and willingness to work under pressure and manage time and priorities effectively with little to no supervision.
- Highly effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to audiences of varying levels of seniority.
Education
- Bachelor’s/University degree or equivalent experience.
