The Opportunity :

The Contract Manager is responsible for performing contract management work within an integrated workforce. They must have in-depth knowledge of legislative frameworks, government decision-making, and Defence’s mission and policy requirements. They will provide detailed technical, professional, and policy advice related to product sustainment and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management, and policy development.

The Contract Manager will exercise independence and leadership, making sound decisions and judgments to provide expert policy advice. They are responsible for developing, implementing, ensuring compliance with, and reviewing policies and procedures related to contract management. They will handle complex problem-solving and issues management, potentially coordinating detailed or sensitive projects impacting strategic, political, or operational outcomes.

This is a permanent full-time position based in Melbourne. Interstate applicants may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The role requires an active AGSVA NV1 clearance at commencement, with a willingness to upgrade to NV2.

Key Responsibilities :

  1. Manage resources, set priorities, oversee workflows, develop strategies, and evaluate business outcomes.
  2. Provide procurement planning, tendering, and contract management activities supporting product management, ensuring legislative and policy compliance.
  3. Advise and support Product and Fleet Managers on contract management and commercial strategies.
  4. Assist in contract negotiations, prepare Contract Change Proposals (CCPs), and monitor contract performance and compliance.
  5. Engage and negotiate with clients and stakeholders, responding to issues and identifying alternative actions.
  6. Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including industry representatives.
  7. Design and implement risk mitigation strategies related to contract activities, supplier performance, and compliance.
  8. Translate legal principles and legislative obligations into practical contract management actions, ensuring compliance and managing commercial risks.

Required Qualifications, Experience, and Knowledge :

  1. Tertiary Degree in Business, Finance, or Law.
  2. Experience in commercial management, contract negotiation, and procurement within a Defence setting.
  3. Strong knowledge of ASDEFCON.
  4. Problem-solving skills and ability to manage issues supporting capability delivery.
  5. Effective collaboration and communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  6. Ability to ensure procurement, contracting, and tendering meet legislative and policy requirements.
  7. Skills in developing and implementing work plans to achieve outcomes.
