Job description

We are working with a leading engineering company with their Head office in Hull. They specialise in the design, installation, and maintenance of building services and infrastructure. Providing expert solutions through a team of commercial electricians and mechanical engineers.

We are recruiting for an experienced Commercial Manager to join their team.

About the Role

  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to the Contract Managers, Estimation Department, Accounts and other functions at the business.
  • Play a key role in the management and liaison of sub-contractors.
  • Assist with sub-contractor negotiations including pre-lets and sub-contractor purchase orders.
  • Ensure site diaries are provided and kept up to date by site teams.
  • Attend all internal commercial review meetings for key projects and liaise with clients QS, financial and site teams where necessary.
  • Ensure applications and variation logs are assessed by contract managers before they are due to be sent to clients.
  • Ensure variations are carried out in a timely manner and kept up to date by Contract managers.
  • Provide procurement support to contract managers for purchasing materials as well as sub-contractors and ensuring enough quotes are obtained to enable procurement decisions to be made effectively.
  • Cost control - monitoring that we are achieving best value across the business in terms of procuring any materials or services.
  • Compliance with Contract type.
  • Review client contracts, orders or letters of intent as soon as we receive them.
  • Manage the commercial contract right through to receipt, agreement and signing and through to project completion and final account.
  • Ensure sub-contractors terms are back to back where possible with GW client contracts.
  • Assist others to deliver projects to the highest standard, on time and to budget.
  • Carry out regular assessments on projects to ensure progress and profitability.
  • Monitor and measure progress on projects.
  • Provide valuation and assessments supporting the application process to clients.
  • Ensure that the client project update forms are delivered at the frequency agreed.
  • Monitor spend, in all areas. Ensure within budget.
  • Apply cost saving where possible.
  • Provide substantiation to clients where necessary.
  • Ensure early warnings and other contractual notices are identified and actioned where necessary.
  • Agree final accounts.
  • Liaise with site, contracting, accounts team and client to agree final accounts on projects and ensure payment in line with payment terms.
  • Be transparent with team and clients to ensure ongoing positive and productive working relationships.
  • Liaise closely with the financial controller to monitor project costings and other departments.
  • Advise margin improvement plans for projects that need it.
  • Aim for positive cashflow on all projects.
  • Actively reduce risk and opportunities within projects.
  • Track variations and liaise with other departments to ensure legibility.
  • Resolve disputes or claims promptly.
  • Working with others, aim to identify and manage claims relating to delays, disruption or scope changes.
