Job description

This is a fixed-term contract for parental leave cover to support our client's Scotland Business Development and Commercial Team. The role focuses on securing and closing commercial and legal agreements to facilitate the growth of Scottish heat networks. It may also provide tactical support to the Head of Business Development and the wider team on various projects.

The Commercial Manager (CM) is responsible for providing commercial support to grow the business, advising the Head of Business Development, and working within Project Teams to make risk-based commercial decisions to meet KPIs and contractual obligations. This is a client-facing role, requiring representation of our colleagues with clients, customers, and joint venture partners.

The CM collaborates with colleagues from business development, engineering, and delivery to shape and deliver district heating infrastructure projects, supporting operational decisions related to network expansions, grants, and pricing. Responsibilities include preparing high-quality bids and proposals, designing commercial structures, leading negotiations to contract closure, and managing contracts during project delivery. Additionally, the CM supports Project Managers through internal governance processes.

The role involves working closely with internal and external lawyers, Account Directors, Development Engineers, Engineering Managers, Analysts, and Project Managers to ensure a seamless transition from bidding to contract negotiation and project execution. The CM applies commercial acumen, risk management, and financial expertise to realize development opportunities, manage contracts up to and after financial close, and protect our client’s risk position. Contracts managed may include Energy Services Agreements, Adoption Agreements, Plot Connection Agreements, and others involving supply chain clients.

Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar Commercial Manager role, demonstrating negotiation and financial modelling skills for major deals. Essential skills include financial planning, managing interfaces between technical and legal teams, project management, communication, multitasking, and understanding infrastructure costs from CAPEX to OPEX and REPEX.

Desirable skills include knowledge of UK energy and property markets, ability to delegate, understanding of District Heating solutions, building regulations, and project delivery from concept to billing.
