Job description

Our client is a groundworks and civil engineering contractor based in the East Midlands. They are stable and profitable, with a residential developer client base that is predominantly repeat business and are set to increase their turnover in 2025. They're looking for a Commercial Manager.


As Commercial Manager, your main responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Development and management of the commercial function, covering estimating, surveying, cost control.
  2. Support the MD with business development, client relationships, and recruitment of key personnel.
  3. Lead the commercial team in maximizing the commercial performance of the business.
  4. Ensure that the strategy, policy, culture, and standards established by the business leadership team are effectively deployed within the commercial team.
  5. Control costs and effectively manage budgets.
  6. Manage and support projects on commercial and supplier contracting aspects of projects across the business.
  7. Support the MD in work winning.
  8. Manage operational efficiency and continuously identify areas for business improvement.
  9. Manage relationships with key external and internal stakeholders.

Person Specification:

  1. Experienced in either the delivery of groundworks at a senior management/director level or commercial experience with a large housebuilder.
  2. The role suits an individual with a proven track record in successfully leading a target-driven commercial team within the groundworks or house building industry.
  3. Exceptional negotiation, leadership, and communication skills are required.
  4. Excellent commercial acumen and strong financial and business skills are essential for this role.
