The Commercial Manager is accountable to the Commercial Director for post-contract commercial management of medium value/medium risk activity and support pre-contract activity within the programme and delivery team’s scope of work, providing specialist commercial advice, guidance, and recommendations to mitigate commercial risks.

Responsibilities
  1. Interact and become a key member of the project delivery team, providing a quality service to support effective project delivery.
  2. Support effective information sharing and collection with all project stakeholders appropriately.
  3. Assist the Programme and project teams in monitoring breaches of corporate governance.
  4. Manage cost reporting of all allocated projects within the S reporting framework, including Cost Forecasting, Anticipated Final Cost, Cost of Work Done, Gross Billing, and Current Contract Value.
  5. Monitor, manage, and report on all commercial aspects of allocated projects, flagging issues and proposing mitigation actions early to relevant stakeholders.
  6. Review contractor delivery, lead valuation of medium value/medium risk contracts, and attend progress meetings to influence contractor’s commercial behaviours and delivery.
  7. Manage assessment and valuation of contractor applications and payment certification, ensuring compliance with contractual terms and progress consistency.
  8. Provide proactive advice to Project Managers on scope changes, recommending appropriate actions and preparing necessary documentation for approval.
  9. Produce applications for payment/invoices in accordance with funding agreements, including supporting documentation.
  10. Identify and advise on all commercial risks, claims, and target change events.
  11. Provide management information and analysis to support informed decision-making.
  12. Produce commercial correspondence and contractual notices, ensuring proper record retention.
  13. Support cost analysis of completed projects to promote efficiencies and continual improvement.
  14. Assist with pre and post-contract procurement activities and provide guidance on project scope and scale.
  15. Support negotiations of prices under existing contracts and participate in risk assessments and value management workshops.
  16. Ensure contractual specifications for safety and standards are effectively implemented and monitored.
Key Competencies and Experience

Essential

  • Relevant experience in commercial management
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of WSP and supply chain options
  • Understanding of Health, Safety, and Environmental Regulations
  • Commercial and financial knowledge

Successful applicants will be required to undergo security clearance prior to appointment.

Desirable

  • Membership of professional bodies such as APM
  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt
  • Degree or equivalent qualification
  • Knowledge of investment processes and procedures

The role requires candidates to be based in Derby 3 days per week as the project requires.
