Job description

Commercial Gas Engineer

Location: HMP Albany (IOW), Albany, 55 Parkhurst Rd, Newport, PO30 5RS

Salary: £41,000 per annum

Contract: Permanent, full-time, 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday

We are seeking an experienced Plumber with a proven history as a Commercial Gas Engineer to join our team at HMP Albany (IOW), a category B adult male prison. Join a team that works Monday to Friday as a supportive and driven family, working together to create a safe and nurturing environment.

HMP Albany (IOW) operates like a self-contained city, requiring hundreds of staff to keep it functioning. Our Facilities Maintenance Team is committed to ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the facility, impacting prisoners, staff, visitors, families, and the community.

As a Commercial Gas Engineer, you will work alongside experienced colleagues including Plumbers, Electricians, Carpenters, Painters, Cleaners, and Administrators, all dedicated to making a positive difference and providing a secure environment.

We are a Ministry of Justice business providing critical services to HMPPS and seek a Commercial Gas Engineer with the following qualifications:

  • City & Guilds 6189 Plumbing and Domestic Heating
  • City & Guilds 5962 Certificate in Plumbing (Advanced Craft)
  • City & Guilds 6019 Mechanical Engineering Services
  • City & Guilds 6018 Heating and Ventilation Installation
  • City & Guilds 214 Engineering Systems Maintenance
  • City & Guilds 6188 Heating and Ventilating
  • City & Guilds 6088 Certificate in Heating and Ventilating
  • City & Guilds 6032 Advanced Craft Certificate in Plumbing
  • EAL 603/4028/9 or 600/8595/2 Diploma in Plumbing and Heating
  • City & Guilds 6009/Q1014058 Mechanical Engineering Services - Plumbing (Domestic)
  • BPEC 600/6863/2 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Domestic Plumbing and Heating

Plus, the following certifications are essential:

  • COCN1 & CCN1 - Core Gas Safety Certificates and relevant commercial units
  • Unvented Water Heater Vessel Course G3

And a combination of:

  • Two years’ experience as a heating engineer, combustion engineer, or equivalent
  • Familiarity with Water Supply Regulation and Legionella L8 requirements
  • Knowledge of Gas Safe regulations (installation and use) 1998 and industry standards
  • Experience with commercial catering gas appliances is beneficial
  • L8 Legionella awareness training
