Your new role

As the Commercial Director, you will play a pivotal role in driving the commercial success of their projects. You will be responsible for overseeing the commercial aspects of their ventures, ensuring they are executed efficiently and effectively. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and manage a team to deliver the commercial aspects of various projects ranging from £5m to £200m, ensuring they meet contract requirements, stay within budget, and align with company policies.
  • Identify and assess key risks and opportunities to support decision-making and actions that will protect and enhance the commercial success of the projects.
  • Negotiate with principal stakeholders on the projects to ensure all parties' expectations are met.
  • Promote continuous improvements within the commercial team, business practices, and policies as part of the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Collaborate strategically with HR on all aspects of employee relations to foster a culture of continuous improvement and transparency in line with company values and associated behaviours.
  • Lead on project disputes, both formal and informal, making key decisions and engaging third-party legal advisors and experts as needed.
  • Report monthly on the financial performance and status of the projects.
  • Ensure teams implement the commercial strategy in accordance with company SOPs and within agreed limits of authority.
  • Engage with the Pre-Construction department to ensure continuous learning and feedback, influencing and advising on tenders, and maintaining a continuous thread of commercial information from inception to completion.
  • Uphold company values in all interactions with employees, clients, subcontractors, and other external contacts.
  • Model best practices and innovation through company values with all stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with Operations Directors to ensure project needs are met and any key delivery issues affecting commercial outcomes are managed appropriately.
  • Add value through visibility and travel as necessary throughout the UK.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Experience in Ports, Harbours, Rail, Defence, Infrastructure, and Flood Prevention is desirable.
  • Proven experience in a senior commercial management role within the construction or civil engineering industry.
  • Experience leading multiple teams on varying projects.
  • Understanding of single-stage, two-stage & negotiated tendering.
  • Working with varying forms of building contracts - FIDIC, JCT, NEC, and bespoke.
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to drive commercial performance.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
  • Financial acumen and experience managing budgets and forecasts.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and risk management.
