Commercial Director

Location: Bridgwater

The Commercial Director reports directly to the Operations Director (HPC) and is responsible for all commercial and contractual aspects of the HPC contract, including portfolio management, reporting, project controls, payments, and finance.


  1. Develop and align the commercial strategy across internal legal entities (BUK, BET, BPE, BPT) with clear goals, targets, and objectives.
  2. Provide NEC contract guidance and support to Bilfinger entities and project teams, leading senior client-facing meetings to mitigate exposure.
  3. Review and challenge monthly project performance reports, validating receivables, WIP, and working capital to ensure consistency and best practices.
  4. Analyze underperformance across contracts and implement intervention plans to mitigate risks and improve performance, including resolving disallowed costs.
  5. Establish a commercial operating culture through standardized reporting, controls, and performance data to ensure compliance and transparency.
  6. Manage and resolve disputes internally and externally across all contracts in a timely manner.
  7. Oversee the clearance of EWNs and CEs, and review risk registers. Define organizational requirements, responsibilities, and develop the commercial team through coaching and training.
  8. Participate in performance reviews, work with teams to mitigate withheld amounts monthly.
  9. Review and validate rates, margin models, cash-flow forecasts, and commercial aspects of tenders, ensuring acceptable terms and margins.
  10. Ensure correct application of the AFP process and timely submissions to clients.
  11. Lead commercial input in new tenders and contract handovers, supporting operational transitions.
  12. Manage stakeholder relationships with clients to mitigate losses and develop claim strategies for financial recovery.
  13. Collaborate with the Operations Director to develop budgets and accurate forecasts.
  14. Identify and implement efficiencies and savings on the HPC project, discussing these with clients.
  15. Ensure all project plans align with the master contract and address any gaps.
  16. Work with other Commercial Directors on BTOP initiatives to deliver measurable benefits.
  17. Conduct site visits to drive commercial performance, innovations, and lessons learned.
  18. Support regional commercial teams during client audits.
  19. Travel approximately 2-3 days per month to Bilfinger locations in Hull, Warrington, Germany, and France.
