Job summary
INTRODUCTION
This is an NHS post in Colorectal and General Surgery attached to the Department of Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), part of the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. QEHB is a state-of-the-art hospital opened in June 2010, providing a full range of tertiary and supra-regional services. It is the main hospital for the Centre for Defence Medicine, with a comprehensive military medical staff, and the main receiving hospital for injured servicemen and women in combat. The hospital is a regional trauma centre equipped with 100 ITU beds, multiple CT scanners (including one in A&E), MRI scanners, and PET imaging.
The Colorectal Unit at QEHB offers services for colorectal cancer and benign conditions, including complex cases such as peritoneal malignancy, early colorectal cancer, and exenterative surgery. It also provides familial colorectal cancer and polyposis services, anal cancer treatment, inflammatory bowel disease management, intestinal failure, complex proctology, and pelvic floor disorders. The successful candidate will join a team of thirteen colorectal surgeons and contribute to both benign and malignant disease management.
The appointee will be expected to provide 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week, divided into 8.5 sessions of direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 sessions of supporting professional activity (SPA). An additional SPA may be granted if justified.
The weekly timetable will be flexible. The team covers four full-day operating lists at QEHB and four at Solihull Hospital weekly. The appointee must ensure coverage during leave periods. Responsibilities include weekly endoscopy and clinic sessions, as well as attendance at multidisciplinary team meetings, monthly consultant meetings, and morbidity & mortality/govemance meetings.
The appointee will contribute to the Emergency On-Call service for General Surgery, with a rota split into midweek (Monday-Thursday) and weekend (Friday-Sunday) shifts, with handovers on Monday and Friday mornings. The initial on-call frequency is 1:6 for midweek, reducing to 1:14 after two years, and 1:11 for weekends.
