Job description

Become a River Ranger to help conserve, survey, and champion your local watercourses across the Colne Valley Regional Park. All levels of expertise are welcome, with no previous experience required!

River Rangers play a key role in monitoring and reporting on a small stretch of river. River Ranger activities include:

Monitoring and Reporting

  1. Wildlife and riverbank features provide vital information which adds to our local knowledge helping understand trends and changes.
  2. Water quality and river features, which provide important information to help improve river decision-making at a local level.
  3. Reporting pollution incidents to ensure a quick response is vital for river health.
  4. Surveying the river system for invasive species focusing on Himalayan Balsam and Floating Pennywort to help quick action to control the spread of species.
  5. Fly tipping and littering which threatens local ecology as well as the public enjoyment of the river system.

Additional Activities

  1. Practical conservation activities to preserve and enhance local habitats.
  2. Nature and well-being walks.
  3. Public engagement about the local river environment, including threats and solutions.

As a volunteer River Ranger, you can choose how often you volunteer, for example, 2 hours every month or once a year. Each individual will be fully supported by the Colne Valley Regional Park, who will provide training and equipment as well as offering river-focused workshops and social events.
