Are you passionate about protecting and enhancing our stunning coastline? North Yorkshire Council is seeking a dedicated and forward-thinkingCoastal Processes Scientistto join our dynamic Coastal Management team.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in safeguarding one of the UK’s most iconic and diverse coastal regions, from the dramatic cliffs of Whitby to the sandy shores of Filey.

In this role, you’ll apply your scientific expertise to monitor coastal processes, assess risks from erosion and flooding, and support the development of sustainable coastal strategies. Working closely with local communities, environmental partners, and national agencies, you’ll help ensure our coast remains resilient, vibrant, and thriving for generations to come.

Our Team

TheHarbours and Coastal Infrastructure Teamat North Yorkshire Council plays a vital role in managing, maintaining, and developing the region’s diverse and historic coastal assets. From bustling harbours and fishing ports to sea walls, piers, and promenades, the team ensures that critical infrastructure remains safe, resilient, and fit for purpose in the face of evolving environmental and economic challenges.

Working at the intersection of engineering, environmental science, and community engagement, the team supports sustainable coastal development while preserving the unique character and heritage of North Yorkshire’s coastline. Their work is essential to protecting livelihoods, supporting tourism, and enhancing the coastal experience for residents and visitors alike.

The Role

As a Coastal Scientist, you will:

  • Support the delivery of the Northeast Coastal Monitoring Programme, providing expert analysis of coastal data and processes.
  • Deputise for the Senior Project & Programme Manager (Coastal) when needed, manage survey data, and ensure accurate reporting and data sharing across regional and national platforms.
  • Work closely with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, representing the Council at public meetings and consultations, and liaising with local authorities, statutory bodies, and national coastal groups.
  • Coordinate regional partner meetings and collaborate with internal teams such as Legal, Procurement, and Communications to support project delivery.

This is a varied role combining scientific analysis, project coordination, and hands-on coastal monitoring, including fieldwork and storm response requiring flexibility, strong communication skills, and a proactive approach.

About You

The successful candidate will:

·Be a motivated and knowledgeable coastal professional with a strong understanding of coastal management and strategic monitoring programmes.

·Bring expertise in coastal processes and their impact on communities, along with hands-on experience in topographic and bathymetric surveying, wave buoy deployment, and GNSS equipment use.

·Be confident working with GIS and managing complex datasets, with a solid grasp of data quality assurance standards.

·Stay up to date with the latest advancements in coastal survey technologies and are committed to applying best practices in your work.

The post holder’s technical insight, analytical skills, and collaborative approach will make a valuable contributor to both fieldwork and strategic planning.
