Job description

DK Recruitment are working with a world-renowned, precision Engineering business based in Plymouth who are expanding their Engineering team. The business has a strong culture of innovation, professional growth and are offering an exciting career journey.


The position of CNC SETTER PROGRAMMER will be responsible for setting up, running and controlling the processes and assisting less skilled or more junior employees in resolving process problems, as instructed by the Cell Leader, to meet Cell targets on cost, quality and timeliness.


In addition to the above responsibility, this role will also include allotted time away from setting duties to create & modify CNC programs offline, design work holding, specify and order tooling.


Main Duties:
  1. To set up, operate and control processes in the sequence as instructed by the Leader. To perform this, the employee will:
  2. Draw from the relevant storage area all materials, equipment, tooling and documentation required to set up the process.
  3. Set up the process in accordance with relevant instructions, i.e. Route Card, P.S.P.I., I.S.P.I., Working Practice.
  4. Consult with the Team Leader if it is not possible to achieve process to the relevant instructions.
  5. Carry out all necessary checks and record on the relevant documentation all checks that have been carried out.
  6. Run the process or instruct the relevant employees to run the process.
  7. To offline modify programs for changes including material size amendments and tooling changes.
  8. To write offline new programs for established product styles.
  9. To identify tooling requirements, for new programs, design tooling as required working in conjunction with manufacturing and design engineers.
  10. Order external tooling as required, holder's tips etc.
  11. To account for all materials and product being worked on the process the Setter has been designated to control, for all shifts worked.
  12. To maintain accurate, legible records using the appropriate recording systems.
  13. To work correctly to the Company direct and indirect time reporting system, reporting any problems encountered to the Team leader.
  14. To communicate with the Team leader on all problems affecting the process being controlled or the overall performance of the Cell.
  15. To communicate with other employees in the Cell, services to the Cell and other Cell leaders on process capability problems as instructed by the Cell Leader.
  16. To carry out related duties as required.
Skills & Experience:
  1. A good level of computer literacy.
  2. The ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
  3. An extensive knowledge of and a proven background in CNC programming, additional training for specific machines will be provided as required.
  4. Experienced in appropriate selection of speeds and feeds.
  5. Understanding of holder, tip & cutter selection.
  6. Understanding of work holding design and requirements.
  7. Understanding of program optimisation.
  8. To have a full understanding of all machinery, equipment, gauging, and processes performed in the Cell.
