Job summary

Petrie Recruitment is seeking a skilled CNC Engineer (Setter/Programmer) in the UK to program, set up and operate milling and turning machines. You will take work from drawings through first-off approvals to stable production and train operators on the shop floor.

The ideal candidate has a recognised apprenticeship or NVQ/City & Guilds Level 3 in Engineering or Machining, with strong Fanuc and CAM (Solid Works/EdgeCam) experience and GD&T proficiency.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Program, set up and operate CNC milling and turning machines.
• Take work from drawing/models to first-off and production.
• Train and support shop-floor operators.
• Interpret drawings, GD&T and tolerances.
• Write/edit CNC programs using CAM software.
• Select tools, fixtures and speeds/feeds for each job.
• Set up machines, load tooling and prove out programs.
• Produce and inspect first-off parts and sign off.
• Monitor performance, tool wear and quality; adjust as needed.
• Use inspection equipment and record results.
• Improve cycle times, tool life and setup times.

Job Elements

• The CNC Engineer (Setter/Programmer) will program, set up and operate CNC milling and turning machines to produce high-quality precision components.
• You will take work from drawing or model through to first-off approval and stable production, and you will help train and support operators on the shop floor.
• Interpret engineering drawings, 3D models and process sheets, including GD&T and tolerances.
• Write, edit and optimise CNC programs using both machine control and CAM software.
• Select and specify cutting tools, work-holding, fixtures and speeds and feeds for each job.
• Set up CNC machines, load tooling, set work and tool offsets, and prove out programs safely.
• Produce and inspect first-off parts, adjust, and sign off for production.
• Monitor machine performance, tool wear and part quality during runs, making corrections as needed.
• Use inspection equipment (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, CMM where applicable) and record results.
• Continuously improve cycle times, tool life and set-up times to reduce cost and scrap.
• Support, guide and train CNC operators and apprentices.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Recognised apprenticeship, NVQ/City & Guilds Level 3 (or equivalent) in Engineering or Machining.
• Further CNC programming or CAM training is an advantage.
• Proven experience as a CNC setter and programmer in a precision engineering or manufacturing environment.
• Strong working knowledge of Fanuc controls.
• Proficiency with CAM software such as Solid Works/Edge Cam.
• Able to read and interpret technical drawings and apply GD&T.
• Solid understanding of machining processes, materials, tooling and work-holding.
• Experience with precision measuring and inspection methods.
• Good problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and a quality-first mindset.
