Job description

Reports To: Manufacturing Team Leader

Job Title: CNC Machinist

Key Purpose of Job:

  • Programming, setting, and operating 3 and 5 axis CNC and manual machines.

Key Tasks:

  • Machining of composite and metallic structures and components for spacecraft systems and sub-systems.
  • Working within the Composites Manufacturing team and liaising closely with the Design Office to deliver high-quality components to tight deadlines for flight assembly and integration.
  • Manufacturing high-precision composite (carbon and metallic) components using 3 and 5-axis CNC milling machines.
  • Performing CNC off-line programming using Autodesk PowerMill and FeatureCAM CAD/CAM software tools.
  • Liaising with Project Engineers and other engineering teams to ensure deadlines and specifications are met.
  • Attending engineering peer reviews to ensure design for manufacture methodology is observed.
  • Participating in regular team meetings.
  • Performing manual machining operations as needed.
  • Executing other activities delegated by the Manufacturing Team Leader.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

  • City & Guilds Mechanical Engineering or a recognized apprenticeship with relevant certificates.
  • Good educational background.

Experience:

  • Background in machining or similar field.
  • Experience in machining high-precision, high-value, low-volume components, ideally in aerospace.
  • Experience with CNC off-line programming using SolidWorks, Autodesk PowerMill, and FeatureCAM is preferred but training will be provided.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Flexible, enthusiastic, with a can-do attitude.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work from engineering drawings and SolidWorks models to high standards and close tolerances; attention to detail is essential.
  • Good communication skills within a small team.
