Job description

TL;DR
  • Early-career Cloud Platform Service Engineer on a major Cloud and Platform managed service
  • A good next step if you have some hands-on IT infrastructure, cloud or technical support experience
  • Fast-growing technology consultancy specialising in the energy sector
  • Aberdeen preferred; elsewhere in Scotland considered with regular travel to Aberdeen
  • Real enterprise platforms — Azure, AWS, VMware, Windows, Linux and Microsoft 365
  • Day-to-day incidents, service requests, monitoring, patching, backups and standard changes
  • Experience with areas such as Azure, Windows Server, Active Directory, networking, VMware or Microsoft 365 helps, but we don’t expect all of it — gaps are absolutely fine, and we care more about fundamentals, curiosity and willingness to learn than a long list of certifications
  • Learn from experienced Cloud Platform Engineers and a Platform Technical Lead, building skills across cloud, infrastructure, automation and troubleshooting
  • Clear technical progression path into Cloud Platform Engineer
  • Energy sector experience useful but absolutely not required
  • Baseline Disclosure Scotland check required

We’re looking for Cloud Platform Service Engineers to join the team delivering a major cloud and platform managed service for an energy sector customer.

This is an early-career role. You might be supporting Windows servers, Azure, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, networking or virtualisation today — on a service desk, in an infrastructure support team, or in a junior cloud role and wanting exposure to a much larger environment. Any of those backgrounds could work.

You’ll join experienced Cloud Platform Engineers and a Platform Technical Lead who will support your development, starting with day-to-day incidents, service requests, monitoring alerts, patching, backups and standard changes, with help available when something gets complex.

The environment is large and varied — Azure, AWS, VMware, Windows and Linux infrastructure, Microsoft 365 and other cloud technologies. You don’t need experience with all, or even most, of it. What matters is that you have some practical technical experience, understand the basics, enjoy troubleshooting and want to learn. We want you to investigate problems rather than move tickets between queues, ask good questions when you’re stuck, and learn from the engineers around you.

You’ll work within established processes using ServiceNow for incidents, requests and changes. Never used it? Experience with another ticketing or IT service-management system is equally useful.

As your knowledge and confidence grow, you’ll take on more complex work, with a clear progression route to Cloud Platform Engineer.

Key responsibilities
Day-to-day technical support
  • Investigate and resolve cloud and infrastructure incidents
  • Respond to monitoring alerts and carry out initial troubleshooting
  • Complete technical service requests and routine operational tasks
  • Keep tickets updated so customers and other engineers know what’s happening
  • Follow issues through rather than passing them on, escalating to experienced engineers when an issue becomes more complex
Platform operations
  • Help operate and maintain the customer’s cloud and infrastructure environment
  • Work with Azure, Windows and Linux servers, VMware, networking, identity and Microsoft 365
  • Carry out routine platform health checks and respond to what they find
  • Learn how the parts of a large hybrid cloud environment fit together
  • Work alongside experienced engineers on more complex problems
Patching, backups and routine changes
  • Deliver regular Windows and Linux patching
  • Monitor backups and investigate straightforward failures
  • Support planned restore testing
  • Carry out documented standard changes using agreed procedures
  • Check systems are healthy afterwards, escalating anything unexpected rather than taking unnecessary risks
Troubleshooting and learning
  • Use logs, monitoring tools and documentation to investigate problems in a structured way
  • Document what you found and how you resolved it
  • Learn from escalated incidents and more experienced engineers
  • Build your knowledge across cloud, infrastructure, networking and automation
Documentation and improvement
  • Follow existing technical runbooks and support procedures
  • Improve documentation when you find something missing or unclear
  • Create knowledge articles from issues you’ve resolved
  • Suggest ways repetitive tasks could be simplified or automated
  • Share what you learn with the team
Requirements
  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • Willing to undergo a Baseline Disclosure Scotland check as a condition of employment
  • Able to attend customer site in Aberdeen when required
  • Some hands-on experience in IT infrastructure, cloud, technical support or a similar technical role
  • Comfortable working with business systems and following documented processes
  • Willing to learn, ask questions and develop your technical skillsWilling to support occasional planned out-of-hours maintenance
Technical skills and experience

You don’t need to tick every box. We’re looking for someone with useful foundations who wants to develop them further.

Useful:

  • Microsoft Azure or another public cloud platform
  • Windows Server
  • Active Directory or Entra ID
  • Microsoft 365
  • VMware or another virtualisation platform
  • Basic networking, DNS and IP addressing
  • Monitoring and backup tools

A bonus, but not essential:

  • PowerShell, scripting or automation — we’ll help you develop these as part of the role
  • AWS
  • Citrix
  • ServiceNow
  • Infrastructure or network support
  • Energy or Oil and Gas environments — and if you’ve never worked in the sector, that’s absolutely fine
  • Consultancy or managed services

You should be comfortable investigating when something isn’t working: reading the error, checking logs and monitoring, following documentation, and explaining what you’ve already tried when you ask for help.

What we’re looking for

How you approach technology matters as much as what you’ve already worked with. We’re looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys figuring out how things work
  • Investigates a problem before escalating it
  • Isn’t afraid to say when they don’t know something
  • Asks questions and learns from more experienced engineers
  • Takes ownership of their work
  • Communicates clearly with colleagues and customers
  • Pays attention to detail
  • Wants a career in cloud and infrastructure engineering

Not the finished article — good foundations we can develop into a really strong Cloud Platform Engineer.

What’s in it for you?

Early in your career, this role gives you a far broader and more substantial technology environment than you’d normally see at this stage, on real production systems.

You’ll work directly with experienced Cloud Platform Engineers, a Platform Technical Lead and specialists from Hypercube’s wider cloud, infrastructure, security, data and AI practices, developing practical skills across Azure, AWS, hybrid infrastructure, networking and automation.

We’ll support your training, certification and technical development, and the engineers around you are expected to help you learn rather than expect you to already know everything.

  • Events and community
  • Private health insurance
  • Health cash plan
  • EV leasing scheme

  • Enhanced maternity leave
  • and more to come (we’re exploring some cool stuff, watch this space)
