Who are we?

Hypercube Consulting is the leading technology partner for the energy sector, building a world‑class team with deep domain knowledge in all things energy. We work across cloud, infrastructure, data, AI and software, helping energy‑sector organisations modernise and operate the technology platforms behind genuinely important business services.

We’re looking for Cloud Platform Engineers to provide the core technical engineering capability within a major cloud and platform managed service for an energy sector customer.

Strong hands‑on AWS experience is essential. We need someone who has genuinely operated AWS infrastructure in production – investigating incidents, making changes, maintaining services, troubleshooting networking and compute, responding to monitoring, supporting backup and recovery, and dealing with the day‑to‑day realities of keeping an AWS environment running. Certification or occasional project exposure won’t be enough: you need demonstrable experience supporting AWS‑based infrastructure and owning AWS issues at T2/T3 level.

You also need strong Microsoft Azure and hybrid infrastructure experience. This is a hands‑on production engineering role sitting between our Cloud Platform Service Engineers and the Platform Technical Lead, owning the incidents, changes, problem investigation and automation that need deeper investigation, broader technical knowledge or greater engineering judgement than routine operational support.

The environment is genuinely hybrid and multi‑cloud, spanning AWS, Microsoft Azure, Azure VMware Solution, Azure Arc‑enabled on‑premises and offshore infrastructure, VMware, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Microsoft 365. The service also covers monitoring, patching, backup and recovery, automation, security remediation and operational support.

This is not a role where you build a platform for six months and hand it over. You keep production services healthy and resolve the difficult problems that arise once technology meets the real world – an AWS networking or EC2 issue, a complex Azure connectivity problem, a failed patch deployment, a recurring backup problem, a major incident.

The service runs in the customer’s own ServiceNow environment and ITIL‑aligned incident, request, change, problem and knowledge‑management processes, so accurate ticket updates, sensible risk assessment, good documentation and disciplined change execution matter alongside engineering ability. You work closely with the Platform Technical Lead and the wider Hypercube technical practice, with access to specialist expertise when an issue needs deeper knowledge.

Key responsibilities
Incident and problem resolution
  • Lead investigation and resolution of T2/T3 incidents across the customer’s cloud and infrastructure estate, and support P1/P2 major incidents
  • Take escalations from Cloud Platform Service Engineers and help them build stronger troubleshooting capability
  • Perform root‑cause analysis, maintain problem records and drive permanent remediation, engaging vendors, specialists or the Platform Technical Lead where needed
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot production infrastructure across AWS, Microsoft Azure and the wider hybrid environment
  • Take particular ownership of AWS operational support - compute, networking, identity, monitoring, backup and platform troubleshooting
  • Support Windows and Linux servers, virtualisation, identity, networking and storage, maintaining health, security and resilience across the multi‑cloud estate
Change, patching and recovery
  • Design and implement standard and complex production infrastructure changes, with clear implementation, test and rollback plans, within the customer’s change‑control processes
  • Assess technical risk, validate service health afterwards, and support controlled out‑of‑hours maintenance
  • Support and troubleshoot patching and vulnerability remediation across Windows, Linux and cloud platforms, including failed deployments and emergency remediation of critical vulnerabilities
  • Investigate complex or recurring backup and recovery issues, support restore testing and disaster‑recovery exercises, and keep recovery runbooks accurate
Automation and continual improvement
  • Identify repetitive operational activity that can be automated or eliminated, and build scripts and Infrastructure as Code to reduce operational toil
  • Improve monitoring, alert quality, compliance reporting and routine remediation, and help prevent configuration drift
  • Look for permanent engineering solutions rather than accepting repetitive manual activity as BAU
Knowledge and mentoring
  • Support and mentor Cloud Platform Service Engineers, sharing troubleshooting methods so more issues are resolved without unnecessary escalation
  • Maintain clear technical runbooks and knowledge articles, and work with the Platform Technical Lead on technical standards and ways of working
Requirements
  • Eligible to work in the UK, able to attend customer site in Aberdeen when required, and willing to undergo a Baseline Disclosure Scotland check
  • Able to join an engineering on‑call/escalation model supporting 24x7 P1/P2 incidents, and comfortable operating production infrastructure where changes carry significant business impact
Technical skills and experience

No candidate knows every technology in the environment. We’re looking for strong production engineering fundamentals, good troubleshooting and broad cloud and infrastructure experience – but hands‑on AWS production support experience is essential.

AWS

- demonstrable experience operating and supporting production AWS infrastructure, including several of:

  • EC2 and associated compute services
  • VPC networking, routing, security groups and connectivity
  • IAM and access management
  • Storage and backup services
  • CloudWatch monitoring and logging
  • Troubleshooting and implementing controlled changes in live AWS environments
  • Infrastructure as Code and automation within AWS
Microsoft Azure and hybrid infrastructure

- strong production support experience across several of:

  • Azure Virtual Machines, networking, storage, monitoring and backup
  • Entra ID and hybrid identity
  • Windows Server and Linux
  • VMware and hybrid cloud infrastructure
  • Networking, DNS, routing and firewalls
Automation

- hands‑on experience with some of:

  • PowerShell
  • Terraform or equivalent Infrastructure as Code
  • Bash or Python
  • Azure DevOps, Git and CI/CD
  • Policy as Code or automated remediation
Also valuable, but not mandatory:
  • Azure VMware Solution
  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
  • Microsoft 365 tenant administration
  • Citrix
  • Veeam or Azure Backup
  • Qualys
  • SUSE Manager
  • containers and Kubernetes
  • ServiceNow
  • critical infrastructure or offshore systems
  • energy or Oil and Gas
  • consultancy or managed services
What’s in it for you?

You work deeply with a substantial enterprise cloud and infrastructure environment rather than being spread thinly across dozens of small support accounts, alongside experienced cloud, infrastructure, security, data and AI specialists, with direct access to senior technical leadership.

There is a clear technical progression path into Platform Technical Lead, Principal engineering, architecture or specialist disciplines, without moving into people management. We support training, certification and technical development – and if you want to build your profile through blogging, speaking, community work or open source, we support that too.
