Job description

Job Description

6 month contract / London or Belfast Hybrid / Inside IR35

This Cloud Engineer will be driving a major cloud transformation journey. You will help evolve application and data hosting into an integrated hybrid multi‑cloud ecosystem, primarily using AWS and Google Cloud. You will design, build, automate, and optimise foundational cloud infrastructure and services that enable developers to deliver secure, scalable, and resilient solutions. Working with a “you build it, you run it” mindset, you will own the full lifecycle of the platforms you engineer and ensure they operate to high standards of reliability and performance.

Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and manage core cloud infrastructure and services on AWS and Google Cloud Platform, covering compute, storage, networking, security, and identity management.
  • Engineer and maintain cloud platforms that support an integrated hybrid multi‑cloud ecosystem, ensuring scalability, resilience, and security.
  • Develop, maintain, and optimise Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, and Google Deployment Manager, creating reusable modules and blueprints to standardise deployments.
  • Automate the provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management of cloud resources and services to reduce manual effort and improve consistency.
  • Build and maintain scripts and tooling in languages such as Python, Go, and Bash to streamline operational tasks and improve engineering efficiency.
  • Implement and manage containerisation using Docker and orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes, including services like Amazon EKS and Google Kubernetes Engine, to support cloud‑native application deployments.
  • Apply Site Reliability Engineering principles by taking operational ownership of the platforms you build, ensuring their reliability, performance, and availability.
  • Implement and maintain robust monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions across cloud platforms to detect issues early and support rapid incident response.
  • Participate in on‑call rotations to troubleshoot, resolve, and learn from production incidents, continuously improving platform reliability.
  • Implement and enforce cloud security best practices in line with internal policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Configure and manage IAM roles, network security groups, firewalls, and encryption to protect cloud workloads and data.
  • Collaborate with development teams to integrate cloud infrastructure provisioning and management into CI/CD pipelines, enabling automated and continuous delivery.
  • Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Terraform, Harness, Tekton, Jenkins, and related platforms.
  • Contribute to automated testing of infrastructure using frameworks such as Terratest, Cucumber, Pytest‑BDD, AWS Fault Injection Simulator, and Chaos Mesh.
  • Create and maintain clear, comprehensive documentation for cloud architectures, configurations, standards, and operational procedures.
  • Mentor junior engineers, share best practices, and contribute to a culture of knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Support continuous improvement of the cloud platform by identifying opportunities to enhance performance, cost efficiency, and developer experience.
Essential Skills
  • Proven experience working as a Cloud Engineer, DevOps Engineer, or Site Reliability Engineer in a mid‑level or senior capacity.
  • Strong hands‑on experience with public cloud platforms, specifically Amazon Web Services (AWS) and/or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Practical expertise in Infrastructure as Code, including the use of Terraform and other IaC tools such as AWS CloudFormation and Google Deployment Manager.
  • Programming skills in Python and Go for automation, tooling, and integration tasks.
  • experience designing, implementing, and managing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Terraform, Harness, Tekton, Jenkins, or similar platforms.
  • experience with test automation for infrastructure and cloud platforms, using tools such as Terratest, Cucumber, Pytest‑BDD, AWS Fault Injection Simulator, and Chaos Mesh.
  • Solid understanding and hands‑on experience with containerisation technologies such as Docker.
  • Strong experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration platforms, including managed services such as Amazon EKS and Google Kubernetes Engine.
  • Strong understanding of cloud networking concepts including VPCs, subnets, routing, and firewalls.
  • Good knowledge of security best practices in cloud environments, including identity and access management (IAM) and network security controls.
  • experience implementing and operating monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions using tools such as Grafana, Splunk, ELK stack, CloudWatch, and Stackdriver.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Site Reliability Engineering principles, including operational ownership, reliability, and performance engineering.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation and communicate effectively with engineering stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Professional certifications from major public cloud providers, such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect, or Google Cloud Professional DevOps Engineer.
  • experience with serverless computing services such as AWS Lambda and Google Cloud Functions.
  • Familiarity with configuration management tools such as Ansible.
  • experience working with cloud database services, including both relational and NoSQL technologies.
  • Knowledge of disaster recovery and business continuity strategies in a multi‑cloud environment.
  • experience with GitOps principles and tools for managing infrastructure and application deployments through version control.
  • Hands‑on experience with Java in the context of cloud‑hosted applications.
  • experience collaborating with cross‑functional teams in an agile or DevOps‑oriented environment.
