Job description

The postholder will work as part of a team providing vascular ultrasound imaging services to the Trust. This will require the application of a broad range of skills and experience in ultrasound to ensure the efficient operation of Ultrasonic Angiology and will liaise closely with medical and technical staff to deliver an effective service. Independent working at outreach clinics will form a proportion of this role. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in audit and research projects and will support training of more junior members of staff. There are opportunities for participating in clinical research, teaching, training, and demonstrating on undergraduate courses.

The successful candidate should hold either an NHS Scientific Training Programme, Post-graduate certificate in Vascular Ultrasound, or a similar qualification.

This role will attract a Recruitment and Retention Premia of £5,000, which is reviewed on an annual basis.

Our Service is delivered from dedicated scanning rooms at both Guy’s and St Thomas sites, each equipped with duplex and TCD systems and linked across sites by a dedicated PACS system, supported by an excellent administration team. We also support spoke hospitals in the South East Thames Vascular Network. We provide a comprehensive vascular ultrasound service for adults and children. Continuing professional development is supported; staff are encouraged to attend national meetings including the Vascular Society of Great Britain & Ireland, Society for Vascular Technology, and the British Medical Ultrasound Society. There are opportunities for participating in clinical research, teaching, training, and demonstrating on undergraduate courses.

Your role will include a varied workload of vascular patients. One-stop and outreach clinic roles will give you the opportunity to work independently, managing your workload and interacting directly with clinicians. Training will be provided to increase your scanning portfolio. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in furthering their career in Vascular Ultrasound. Carry out specialised duplex ultrasound investigations on patients in the department and independently in other locations (clinics, ITU, HDU, theatres, and outreach clinics).

  1. Make complex diagnostic measurements involving imaging of blood vessels and measurement of blood flow characteristics.
  2. Be able to interpret complex anatomy and pathology in order to provide clear diagnostic findings.
  3. Make complex interpretive judgements based on interactively acquired ultrasound blood velocity data and imaging. Make further measurements as necessary.
  4. Record test information and report results and diagnostic findings to the referring clinicians.
