Job Description:

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a vascular scientist, you will be expected to carry out vascular ultrasound diagnostic investigations to the standards required by the department.

General duties will include:

  • Performing arterial and venous duplex scans to support DVT and stroke services, vascular surgery, and others.
  • Ensuring high level of patient care.
  • Prioritising workload by triaging in-patient requests.
  • Independent reporting of scans for consultants/DVT nurses, including appropriate communication of urgent findings.

You will also have the following responsibilities:

  • Explaining to patients the nature of the investigation, being sensitive to their needs, feelings, and sensibilities throughout the procedure. Working closely with other department members to achieve the best possible results.
  • Selecting appropriate investigations based on requests and discussions with patients, and adjusting procedures as necessary. Interpreting findings for reports. Familiarity with other modalities that may assist with testing.
  • Prioritising and managing own workload, accommodating urgent requests without compromising quality. Selecting investigations with the highest clinical priority when capacity is exceeded.
  • Assisting with the development and review of protocols.
  • Maintaining awareness of equipment and consumable costs, ensuring equipment is well maintained and clean.
  • Participating in teaching and supervision of trainees and staff. Attending MDT meetings to present findings. Participating in accreditation activities and CPD. Attending seminars, courses, and conferences for professional development.
  • Documenting investigations with measurements, sketches, and images. Writing concise reports following departmental protocols.
  • Monitoring service accuracy and usefulness through audits and discussions. Supporting research activities as agreed with the Vascular Ultrasound Lead.
  • Maintaining hygiene and reducing cross-infection risks.
  • Being compassionate and delivering sensitive news. Working under pressure in busy settings.
  • Assisting patients with movement and handling equipment.
  • Carrying out investigations requiring concentration and working independently, often with an assistant or alone.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • BSc. in a science subject
  • Accredited Vascular Scientist with Society for Vascular Technology of Great Britain & Ireland OR completion of Vascular STP training

Desirable criteria

  • HCPC Registration
  • Accredited Vascular Scientist with the Society for Vascular Technology of Great Britain & Ireland (if STP qualified)
  • MSc Vascular Science
Experience

Essential criteria

  • Ability to work independently in all areas of vascular ultrasound, including carotid, limb arterial & venous scans, reflux studies, DVT testing.
  • Experience in Doppler ABPI testing.
  • Manage workload, prioritise, meet deadlines.
  • Evidence of CPD and participation in audits.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in general ultrasound, renal access, EVAR duplex, measurement techniques, training, research.
Technical Skills

Essential criteria

  • High competency in vascular ultrasound examinations.
  • Data analysis, reporting, diagramming skills.
  • Manual dexterity.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience with PACS and RIS.
