Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As a vascular scientist, you will be expected to carry out vascular ultrasound diagnostic investigations to the standards required by the department.
General duties will include:
- Performing arterial and venous duplex scans to support DVT and stroke services, vascular surgery, and other departments.
- Ensuring a high level of patient care.
- Prioritising workload by triaging in-patient requests.
- Independent reporting of scans for consultants/DVT nurses, including appropriate communication of urgent findings.
You will also have the following responsibilities:
- Explain to patients the nature of the investigation, being sensitive to their needs, feelings, and sensibilities throughout the procedure.
- Work closely with other members of the department to achieve the best possible results.
- Select appropriate investigations based on the request form and discussion with the patient, adjusting standard procedures as necessary.
- Interpret findings for inclusion in verbal, written, or diagrammatic reports.
- Be familiar with other modalities that may give similar or complementary information.
- Prioritize & manage your own work, accommodating urgent requests without compromising quality.
- Assist with the preparation, development, and review of protocols for investigations.
- Maintain awareness of equipment and consumable costs, assist with equipment maintenance and cleanliness.
- Participate in teaching and supervision of trainees and staff.
- Attend MDT meetings to present findings.
- Maintain accreditation through CPD activities.
- Document investigations accurately with measurements, sketches, and images, and write concise reports.
- Monitor service accuracy and usefulness through audits and discussions.
- Support research activities as agreed.
- Ensure hygiene and reduce cross-infection risks.
- Deliver sensitive results empathetically and work under pressure in busy settings.
- Assist patients with mobility and handle equipment as needed.
- Carry out investigations requiring concentration for extended periods.
- Work independently most of the time, often with an assistant or alone.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc in a science subject
- Accredited Vascular Scientist with Society for Vascular Technology of Great Britain & Ireland OR completed Vascular STP training
Desirable criteria
- HCPC Registration
- Accredited Vascular Scientist with the Society for Vascular Technology of Great Britain & Ireland (if STP qualified)
- MSc in Vascular Science
Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to work independently in all areas of vascular ultrasound (carotid, limb arterial & venous scanning)
- Experience in Doppler ABPI testing
- Manage workload, prioritize, and meet deadlines
- Evidence of professional development
- Participation in departmental audits
Desirable criteria
- Experience in abdominal, gynae, pelvic ultrasound, and renal access scanning
- Post-operative EVAR duplex experience
- Experience with vascular measurement techniques (toe pressures, plethysmography)
- Training/mentoring experience
