To effectively manage and develop the nursing services providing professional and managerial leadership to a group of staff in the delivery of high quality, safe and cost effective care of patients and their families. To inspire and facilitate the development of ward staff by providing an open, supportive and encouraging environment in which all staff feel valued and where best practice prospers.
The post-holder will have specific responsibility for managing the day to day functioning of the ward, as well as the ongoing management of a group of ward staff. This will include the provision of managerial and clinical supervision for designated staff. The post-holder will ensure that every effort is made to maintain a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors through the process of dynamic security and effective management.
Main duties of the job
- Ensure nursing practice is in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional conduct and Mental Health Legislation.
- Process referrals made to the service from outside agencies as well as undertaking more complex assessments and supervising those of junior staff when required.
- To determine the care management needs of those in the acute ward.
- To ensure that all referrals are assessed.
- Organise the duty rota for staff.
- Attend management meetings as required.
- To ensure the safe custody of patient’s property in adherence with Trust and local policies and procedures.
- Develop, promote and implement the ward philosophy, vision and values.
- Participate in maintenance of general and specific patient observations, accurately recording all relevant information.
- Supervising the implementation of Trust and local risk management processes ensuring these are completed accurately within agreed time frames.
- Always act in a manner as to promote and safeguard the interests and well being of patients, visitors and colleagues.
- To deal with the storage and administration of drugs in accordance with legal requirements, local policies and procedures.
- To undertake the role of Clinical Co-ordinator or Ward Manager during annual leave and sickness absence as required.
- To be responsible for the development and implementation of clinical supervision for nurses.
- To participate in appraisal and performance review of the team as well as individual staff and reporting to the Ward Manager.

- To assist and support the Ward Manager in the establishment of an efficient working environment, making the most effective and efficient use of staff, supplies and services.
- Ensure the agreed Trust policies and procedures are followed.
- Report any maintenance requirements through the Trust processes.
- Possess excellent communication skills and be able to form a positive, therapeutic relationship with people who are experiencing acute crisis or distress in the context of partnership and trust.
- To be aware of how your verbal and non-verbal communication can be interpreted by others and ensure a polite approach is maintained at all times.
- Help promote Team cohesiveness, multidisciplinary working and at all times work collaboratively with colleagues in all parts of the Trust to achieve healthy and effective communication.
- To develop a communication system which ensures the flow of current information to and from hospital meetings, forums and the greater healthcare economy.

- Post registration experience within an acute or secure setting at Band 5 (or equivalent).
- Ability to assess, plan, implement and Evaluate patient care and act accordingly if untoward changes occur.
- Knowledge of medication rounds and the safe administration of drugs.
- Use of Rapid Tranquilisation
- Practical experience of providing high quality care.
