Job description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• To deliver the Undergraduate Ophthalmology Curriculum to the medical students on a two week basis, including covering the mandatory teaching topics in an interactive and innovative manner base,
• To deliver the practical skills session for medical students, including the MACCS, workplace based assessments, case based discussion and tutorials and clinical reasoning case based teaching.
• Where appropriate to provide direct clinical teaching within the clinical environment, such as clinics and eye casualty.
• To provide teaching on the Early Clinical Experience Course (14 x Year 1/2 hospital visits).
• To further develop self-directed learning materials including web based learning resources (Moodle).
• Contribute to the formal examination of these students including OSCE examinations and exam question writing. Take part in one-to-one tutoring of students re-sitting their exams and provide one-two-one teaching support for struggling students.
• Contribute in a strategic sense to the evolution of teaching for all the above groups.
• Support teaching across the clinical course as required. This will be especially the case during the period when the Ophthalmology course will not be running between November - February.
• To refine and update a series of hand-outs for the Ophthalmology course.
• Working with the Undergraduate Manager and other Clinical Teaching Fellows to develop innovative teaching methods across the clinical course.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC Full registration MBBS or equivalent
Experience

Essential criteria
  • Satisfactory completion of clinical training attachments both in central (Teaching) and peripheral (District General) acute hospitals. Must have two years of clinical NHS experience - this excludes clinical attachment.
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical experience in Ophthalmology as a doctor, or equivalent experience
Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Evidence, Enthusiastic and experienced in teaching clinical skills in the workplace or training environment to junior staff and students
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching to multidisciplinary groups Presentations at local/regional/national meetings
Research/Audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of active participation and completion of an audit project
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in a clinically-based research project.

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.

  • Transfer of information: If I have previous NHS service - I consent to the transfer of my Electronic Staff Record (ESR) data between this and other NHS Trusts. I also consent to the Occupational Health Department confidentially accessing my occupational health records from my current or previous employer in order to check the status of my vaccinations, immunisations s and screening tests as relevant to the post. I understand this is an automated process and the information will only be used for these purposes prior to me taking up the position at NUH.
  • Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post maybe subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£49.50 for enhanced and £21.50 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month's pay). Should I decide to withdraw from my job offer, I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of the DBS check undertaken by cheque or other agreed method.
