Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a passionate interest in teaching to join our team at St George's. This post is available from August 2025 and is suitable for ST3 level doctor or higher, either interested in a career or already pursuing a career in cardiology, for a period of 12 months, with a view to extension, if applicable.

This exciting role will provide you with the opportunity to develop your teaching skills and enhance your understanding of all aspects of medical education. You will be involved in teaching undergraduate medical students during their cardiology attachment. Teaching will be varied, and it is hoped that you will develop your own skills and be able to facilitate small group teaching, simulation training, deliver lectures to larger audiences, and teach clinical skills at the bedside.

You would be expected to undertake a formal medical educational qualification and will be supported in applying for the Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Education (PGCert) at St George's, University of London (SGUL) to further develop teaching skills. This will lead to a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) qualification.

Main duties of the job

You will have the opportunity to participate in postgraduate cardiology medical teaching. It is expected that at least 50% of your time will be spent delivering and preparing for undergraduate teaching. The remaining time offers flexibility to tailor your experience to your clinical and/or academic interests, which may include exposure to echocardiography, cardiac MRI, angiography sessions, and cardiology clinics, subject to availability. There are excellent training opportunities with regular departmental meetings and journal clubs. You will be required to undertake one general Cardiology Clinic per week and may participate in cardiology on-call arrangements where appropriate, but this is not mandatory.

The post holder should have completed their General Professional Training and ideally hold a full MRCP or equivalent. Experience working in the NHS and knowledge of teaching delivery in a UK medical school are essential. The role provides a strong foundation for future careers in cardiology and medical education. Previous post holders have ranged from ST3-ST7 cardiology registrars and have successfully gained cardiology training positions, funding for MD/PhD, and PGCert/FHEA qualifications. There is also an opportunity to attain BSE accreditation in transthoracic echocardiography and participate in simulation courses at the GAPS centre at St George's.
