Job description

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust

The Ophthalmology Department cares for patients of all ages attending a wide range of ophthalmic clinics. We have doctor/nurse-led clinics on all sites.

Within this post, you will work in general ophthalmology clinics and more specialised ophthalmic clinics, conduct preoperative assessments, and support the organisation and running of clinics on a day-to-day basis. This provides the opportunity to cover all different aspects of ophthalmic care.

You will undergo in-house training specialising in ophthalmic nursing care.

You will be expected to complete the ophthalmic competencies required to work in the department.

Main duties of the job
  • Work in support of and under the direction of a registered nurse, providing nursing care and assistance to patients within defined parameters specified by the Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Provide basic patient care and document that care in the patient records.
  • Perform agreed clinical tasks, clerical duties, and phlebotomy.
  • Participate in working flexible hours to meet the needs of the service, including evenings and weekends.
About us

We operate from three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as several community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and RLI offer a range of general hospital services, including emergency departments, critical/coronary care units, and consultant-led services.

WGH provides general hospital services along with an Urgent Treatment Centre for non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three hospitals provide planned care including outpatient services, diagnostics, therapies, day cases, and inpatient surgery. Additionally, local outreach services and diagnostics are provided across Morecambe Bay.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
  • Good general education
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills
  • Willingness to undertake NVQ level 3 in care related to the area
Experience
  • Manual handling of patients
  • Previous experience in a care environment
  • Awareness of NHS structure and current issues
Skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Basic IT skills
  • Good basic hygiene skills (e.g., food handling, hand washing)
  • Some knowledge or interest in ophthalmic care
