Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Primrose Unit for a part time position for an experienced clinical support worker to work within the oncology clinics, phlebotomy and chemotherapy suite.

As a senior clinical support worker you will support junior CSW's and work closely alongside the chemotherapy nurses, consultants and allied health professionals to deliver/ provide individualised, holistic care in a safe and caring environment to cancer patients.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will carry out assigned tasks involving direct care of chemotherapy patients in support of, and under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse, in the Macmillan Primrose Unit. Including the running of outpatient oncology clinics, phlebotomy clinic and working in the chemotherapy suite on a rotational basis.

We are looking for someone who is a team player with good listening and organisational skills , an empathic nature and excellent communicator and who is ready for a challenge.

Job description Job responsibilities
  • To provide skilled nursing care under the supervision of the nurse providing care, undertaking routine and specifically identified tasks. This will include but is not limited to patient observation, phlebotomy, urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring and, ECGs, cannulation removal, scalp cooling therapy.
  • Requesting Blood tests on ICE as per instruction from registered nurses or medical team..
  • Undertake patient care, ensuring privacy and dignity maintained whilst being aware of physical and psychological needs.
  • Alert the registered nurse or responsible clinical team promptly of any concerns or changes in the patients condition.
  • To rotate between chemotherapy day unit, outpatient clinics and phlebotomy clinic.
  • To prepare clinics, ensuring that all required information and consideration are given ahead of treatment/ clinic appointments to avoid any on the day delay.
  • Check all clinic areas at the end of the day for paperwork and all areas are clean and tidy.
  • Assist in clerical and administrative duties as required.
  • To action any patient outcomes following clinic reviews e.g. scanning radiotherapy sheets to tertiary centre, prescription requests.
  • Communication with patients, schedulers and parent team where changes in patients upcoming appointments maybe required.
  • To liaise and communicate effectively with patients and relatives referring them to the nurses regarding their care, treatment and discharge process.
  • To be a patient advocate and signpost to support services.
  • Act in ways that acknowledge and recognise peoples expressed beliefs, preferences and choices.
  • Working with IT systems to check patients prescriptions, appointments and medical information
  • Collect and record data accurately in accordance with trust policies and guidelines.
  • To inform Nurse in Charge of any matters affecting the standard of patient care delivery
  • To organise, prioritise and adjust workload to enhance the delivery of patient care.
