Job summary

The Hand Therapy team within Plastic Surgery Outpatients, Salisbury District Hospital are looking for a motivated, clinically experienced and innovative Clinical Specialist Hand Therapist to join the team in providing evidence based efficient, safe, effective and quality service for patients.

The plastic surgery department is a regional specialist centre providing care to patients across the south west region, including the Channel Islands. Care provided includes hand and upper limb trauma management, elective management of acquired conditions and a range of specialist services including congenital clinics, spasticity and tendon transfer service, plastics scar management and complex hand reconstruction. The therapy team are proactively involved in multi disciplinary care of all of these caseloads.

This Clinical Specialist role focuses on leadership of the post operative hand service, both elective and trauma. The role includes oversight of patient pathways, joint working on complex cases across inpatient and outpatient care, training and development of staff, audit of patient outcomes and ensuring evidence based quality care delivery within the service.

Candidates would also be required to support the wider senior team with deputisation of the Team Lead during periods of absence.

Main duties of the job

  • To work closely with the Senior Hand Therapy team on strategic service developments and governance.
  • To support deputising for Team Leads during periods of absence.
To work in conjunction with the Senior Hand Therapy team in leading and operationally managing the Hand Service.

To work with the Senior Hand Therapy team in leading change, development and contribute to strategic planning of the Hand Service.

To act as clinical lead and manage the delivery of the MDT post operative care of plastic surgery trauma and elective surgery patients, particularly with regards to hand rehabilitation. To work as clinical lead for surgically managed hand cases facilitating smooth transition of care between inpatient and outpatient pathways.

To work as an autonomous highly skilled practitioner managing highly complex patients.

To have the opportunity to form part of the team delivering unique MDT and therapy clinics for adults and children, including congenital hand clinic, spasticity clinic, tendon transfer clinic and plastic scar clinic.
