NHS Jobs is seeking a dedicated Clinical SMS Nurse to support recovery-focused care within the prison environment, joining the Integrated Mental Health and Substance Misuse Service at HMP Isle of Wight. You will work with a forward-thinking team to assess needs, provide compassionate care and help people move towards safer, healthier outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Nursing Qualification RGN/RMN.
  • Training/Qualification in substance use or hard‑to‑reach care.
  • Experience with CBT and motivational interviewing.
  • Experience in brief solution-focused therapy and mapping techniques.
  • Strong communication and patient engagement skills.

Responsibilities

  • Accept referrals, assess need and oversee health care assessments.
  • Provide harm reduction advice on safer drug use, safer sex, HIV/HBV/HCV.
  • Maintain a robust health care caseload and address health inequalities.
  • Perform clinical checks: urine screens, vital signs, ECGs, blood pressure.
  • Support alcohol and drug detoxes under Band 7 prescriber supervision.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to review care plans and referrals.

Our Integrated Mental Health and Substance Misuse Service at HMP Isle of Wight is looking for a dynamic and experienced Clinical SMS Nurse. The team is innovative, forward thinking and committed to a Recovery focused approach that meets people's needs. You will be part of a supportive team with effective management, supervision and guidance. Working with people who have complex offending backgrounds and substance use needs within prison is both challenging and rewarding.   • skilled/experienced in providing support to people, to make positive changes and work towards recovery?
  • highly motivated with the ability to support and inspire?
  • able to apply your skills/interventions to the care of people with substance use needs that often co-exist with mild to moderate mental health needs.
Main duties of the job
  • To accept healthcare referrals, assess need and oversee all health care assessment to support service user's access timely treatment.
  • Provide harm reduction advice, information and support with an emphasis on safer drug use, safer sex, HIV, Hepatitis A, B and C and other blood borne infections
  • Be responsible for maintaining a robust health care case load supporting the health inequalities agenda.
  • To carry out clinical interventions such as urine screening and CIWA-Ar and COWS, vital sign assessment, ECG's including blood pressure, and other physical health checks.
  • To carry out alcohol and drug detoxes supported by the Band 7 Nurse Prescriber.
  • To carry out comprehensive assessments, construct care packages with multi-disciplinary colleagues where required, review care plans in a structured format and manage onward referral.

To provide a range of structured psycho-social interventions including CBT based brief solution focused therapy and motivational enhancement techniques. To support service users with dual diagnosis needs. To create and facilitate health education initiatives and group work interventions. Demonstrable commitment to service user involvement. To work with a range of professional in ensuring service users needs in terms of safeguarding and mental health are met.

Qualifications
  • Nursing Qualification RGN/RMN
  • Relevant training / Qualification in substance use or health care for hard-to-reach individuals
  • CBT
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Brief solution focussed therapy
  • Mapping techniques (ITEP/BTEI)
Experience
  • Considerable experience of working with drug and alcohol
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to promote service user involvement.
