Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Hold a Diploma/Degree in Professional Nursing.
- Be a first level registered nurse with 2 years experience in an acute setting.
- Possess relevant post basic education and experience, including a minimum of two years at Band 5.
- Provide evidence of continuous personal and professional development.
- Have the aptitude and confidence for working within a rapidly changing environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical and professional leadership to all non-medical staff in the ward, ensuring nursing practice is based on current and best evidence.
- Take responsibility for personal and professional development, maintaining clinical credibility and competence.
- Keep an up-to-date personal portfolio in line with NMC registration requirements.
- Ensure ward's philosophy aligns with clinical governance principles and that staff understand its importance.
- Maintain KPIs, Nurse Care Indicators, and Infection Prevention standards monthly.
- Participate in setting and maintaining high standards of evidence-based nursing.
- Accurately undertake health assessments, interpret clinical signs, results, and investigations, and make management recommendations.
- Supervise and evaluate nursing staff work, promoting patient and carer involvement in care planning and delivery.
- Implement communication systems to keep patients and families informed.
- Conduct regular audits to uphold record-keeping standards.
- Supervise junior staff in developing care priorities and address them promptly, seeking advice when needed.
- Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and staff, demonstrating respect and trust.
- Act as a patient advocate, facilitating shared decision-making.
- Ensure patient needs are expressed and respected in care plans.
- Liaise with other agencies and professionals to maintain service quality.
- Maintain accurate patient records per NMC standards.
- Coordinate clinical activities and manage shifts.
- Serve as clinical leader and role model, sharing expertise.
- Ensure patient information confidentiality and safety.
Communications and Working Relationships
- Work with the ward manager to monitor staff sickness and adhere to absence policies.
- Manage complaints informally and escalate appropriately.
- Ensure equipment is serviced timely.
- Mentor student nurses and set action plans.
- Report clinical incidents accurately and promptly, supporting system improvements.
- Ensure staff adhere to clinical protocols reflecting best practices.
- Participate in recruitment, staff development, and performance monitoring.
- Support staff induction, preceptorship, and training initiatives.
- Review ward documentation and support clinical governance through risk management, education, audits, and best practices.
Education
- Develop clinical practice through ongoing education and share evidence-based practice.
- Participate in mandatory training and contribute to patient education and health promotion.
- Support professional development and lifelong learning.
Manage Finance
- Assist in resource planning, monitoring, and control to optimize ward resources.
- Distribute staff leave evenly and match skill mix to workload.
- Adhere to policies for booking bank and agency staff.
- Use resources cost-effectively and participate in cost improvement initiatives.
