Job description

Clinical Senior Lecturer KCL and Honorary Consultant in PET Imaging

The School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences (BMEIS) is seeking two clinical academics to join its PET Centre and Research Departments at Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). Each post involves clinical, academic, and teaching responsibilities, reporting to the Head of the PET Centre (Prof Alexander Hammers) and Head of the Research Department of Imaging, Chemistry & Biology (ICAB, Prof Stephen Archibald). Clinically, they will be accountable to the PET Centre Clinical Lead and Clinical Directors of the GSTT Clinical Imaging & Medical Physics Directorate, providing PET imaging services to patients referred by GSTT and other NHS Trusts.

This is a full-time, indefinite contract (40 hours per week).

Main duties of the job

This clinical academic role in PET Imaging involves leading research projects aligned with the School’s objectives. Clinical duties include providing high-quality PET scan services (~8000 patients in 2024), supervising clinical lists, supporting and training a multidisciplinary team, and reporting scans independently. The post-holder will contribute to clinical service management and research, oversee clinical trials, and develop a sustainable research program focusing on unmet needs such as TBP imaging, theragnostics, systems biology, metabolic imaging, radiopharmaceutical development, and cell tracking.

The Kings College London and Guys & St Thomas PET Centre is a leading UK clinical PET facility, performing over 8,000 scans annually, with advanced equipment including Total Body PET scanners, a PET-CT scanner, and a PET-MR scanner.

Job responsibilities

Provide High Quality Care to Patients

  • Medically qualified with GMC registration, ARSAC license, and license to practice.
  • Maintain competencies and ensure prompt attendance at clinical activities.
  • Engage patients in care decisions.

Research, Teaching, and Training

  • Collaborate on research within BMEIS and ICAB, securing regulatory approvals.
  • Develop PET research programs, attract grant funding, and lead clinical trials in PET risk-adapted therapy.
  • Teach medical undergraduates, trainees, and supervise research fellows.

Clinical Service Delivery

  • Support PET imaging lists, report images, and diagnose referred patients.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and provide inpatient/outpatient management.

Medical Staff Management

  • Ensure junior staff hours compliance, participate in recruitment, and team objective setting.

Governance

  • Review clinical outcomes, participate in audits, and ensure adherence to guidelines and NICE requirements.

Leadership and Team Working

  • Demonstrate leadership, resolve conflicts, and collaborate across teams and institutions.

Communication & Networking

  • Represent KCL at clinical and research networks, communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, and external partners.

Decision Making, Planning & Problem Solving

  • Evaluate clinical issues, develop guidelines, and support research planning and execution.

Teamwork, Teaching & Learning Support

  • Participate in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching, supervise trainees, and contribute to staff induction and training.

This appointment involves 10 programmed activities (PAs): 4 clinical, 5 research/teaching, and 1 SPA. Opportunities for additional reporting exist, with no formal on-call commitments. The job plan is negotiated annually, supporting CPD and revalidation requirements.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • GMC registration with license to practice, eligible for Specialist Register in Nuclear Medicine or Radionuclide Radiology.
  • MRCP (UK), FRCR, or equivalent; higher training in Nuclear Medicine or Cardiovascular MR imaging Level 3.
  • MD/PhD in relevant discipline.
Other
  • ARSAC license for PET radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Commitment to clinical governance, audit, and service improvement.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Experience
  • Research leadership, publication record, and grant income success.
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Experience in non-oncological PET (neuro, cardiac).
  • Experience in multi-centre research studies.

Salary: £105,504 to £139,882 per year plus £2,162 London Weighting Allowance (CCCB).
