Job overview

You will work as an autonomous HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist within the Clinical Movement Laboratory, delivering highly specialist movement analysis and clinical measurement services for adults and children with complex movement disorders.

The role involves reviewing referrals, planning and undertaking advanced biomechanical and physiological assessments, and selecting or adapting investigation protocols to meet individual patient needs. You will analyse and interpret complex multidimensional data from technologies including three-dimensional motion capture, force measurement, electromyography, pressure measurement, video analysis and wearable sensors.

Working closely with medical, surgical, therapy, prosthetic, orthotic and healthcare science colleagues, you will produce clear, clinically meaningful reports and provide specialist scientific advice to support diagnosis, rehabilitation, treatment planning, surgical decision‑making and evaluation of outcomes.

You will be professionally accountable for the scientific quality, safety and integrity of their work. You will contribute to clinical governance, quality assurance, equipment management, audit, service improvement and the development and validation of new measurement methods.

Main duties of the job

Work autonomously as an HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist, taking professional responsibility for specialist movement-analysis investigations within the postholder’s scope of practice. This will include both lower limb and upper limb analysis.

Review referrals and relevant clinical information, determine whether the requested investigation is appropriate and obtain additional information or advice where necessary.

Prioritise and manage a defined clinical caseload, balancing clinical urgency, patient needs, available resources and service requirements.

Plan and undertake specialist clinical assessments of adults and children with complex movement disorders, disabilities, long-term conditions, neurological conditions, musculoskeletal conditions, limb loss or other relevant presentations.

Obtain a relevant clinical history and undertake observations, measurements and examinations appropriate to the investigation.

Explain complex investigations to patients, families and carers in an accessible manner, adapting communication to meet individual cognitive, sensory, language, developmental or emotional needs.
