Job description

Applications are invited for a band 7 Clinical Scientist posts in the Regional Radiation Protection Service (RRPS) within the Department of Medical Physics at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford.

You will join a team of 25 medical physicists, technicians, and computer scientists supported by an admin team. The service provides comprehensive radiation protection, diagnostic radiology, and x-ray engineering services to various NHS Trusts, private healthcare providers, dentists, veterinary practices, and others. We are active in research, development, and training, organizing courses locally and nationally. The Service collaborates with the University of Surrey's MSc programmes in Medical Physics, Medical Imaging, and Radiation and Environmental Protection, encouraging participation in teaching, research, and development.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will support all aspects of the work including calculations, measurements, and radiation surveys on diagnostic X-ray systems and other non-ionising areas such as MRI, ultrasound, lasers, and UV. Radiation protection support is also provided to Nuclear Medicine departments, PET/CT scanners, and radiotherapy centers. The candidate should be enthusiastic, a good communicator, and a team player. Opportunities to work towards MPE / RPA / RWA / LPA certification and join the HSST training scheme are available. A good honours degree in physical sciences and completion or nearing completion of the STP training scheme or equivalent is required. Travel is involved; a current driving license is essential.

Applicants not fully meeting the job description and still in training are encouraged to apply and will be considered at a lower grade until meeting the full requirements, at which point they will be upgraded to band 7.

The post involves working as a clinical scientist within the RRPS team, providing radiation protection and radiological physics services to the NHS and external bodies. The role includes supporting Medical Physics Experts (MPE) under IR(ME)R 2017, taking responsibility for key service aspects, and operating with a high degree of autonomy in complex, specialist issues.

Specific duties include:

  1. Supporting diagnostic radiology clients across NHS and private sectors, liaising with clinicians and radiographers to optimize patient dose and image quality.
  2. Participating in all scientific work within the team.
  3. Investigating, measuring, analyzing, and reporting on radiation safety, dose, and image quality issues across various X-ray systems.
  4. Providing non-ionising radiation protection services, including safety audits and advice on ultrasound, lasers, UV, magnetic and radiofrequency radiation.
  5. Auditing procedures for compliance with legislation, standards, and good practice across various medical and industrial settings.
  6. Calculating dose and risk in cases of accidental or high doses, including exposures of the unborn child.
  7. Contributing to the design, development, and maintenance of critical databases for RRPS operations.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Masters level education in medical physics, radiation protection, or equivalent.
  • Registration as a clinical scientist or working towards HCPC registration.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Understanding of ionising radiations, their risks, and protection measures.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, standards, and guidelines (e.g., IRR17, IR(ME)R2017, ISO 9001, BSI, RIDDOR, etc.).
  • Experience with measurement techniques and safety assessments of X-ray and other radiation equipment.
  • Understanding clinical risks related to radiation exposure.
  • Initiative and capacity to work independently within specialist areas.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound and non-ionising radiation including lasers, UV, magnetic and radiofrequency fields.
  • Membership of IPEM is desirable.
