Clinical Scientist

The Genomics Laboratory Service at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust are seeking an enthusiastic, well organized and highly motivated individual to join our Clinical Scientist team.

The ideal candidate will be a HCPC registered Clinical Scientists with experience in genomics. Clinical scientist trainees nearing the end of their training programme are also encouraged to apply. Applicants who are not yet registered with the HCPC would be offered a role at Band 6 until training and registration have been completed.

The successful candidate will join a team of Clinical Scientists and Healthcare Science Practitioners to provide a high quality patient focused genomics service. The post holder will be required to analyse results for a range of techniques and carry out variant interpretation. The post holder will be expected to liaise closely with clinical colleagues and work effectively with the Healthcare Science Practitioner staff.

Good planning, organisational and management skills are important for this role as well as good communication skills both written and verbal.

The successful candidate will perform as a HCPC Registered Clinical Scientist in the Genomic laboratory Service undertaking a range of scientific laboratory duties in order to provide an effective and high quality diagnostic clinical service to clinicians and patients.

The post holder, after training will be responsible for undertaking the analysis, interpretation and authorisation of simple and complex reports. In addition to this the post holder will be required to undertake service development, training and quality assurance tasks as directed by Senior Scientists of the laboratory.

Job responsibilities

To direct referrals and the appropriate processing of samples within the laboratory.

To be responsible for the timely and accurate delivery and reporting of a variety (as a part of the laboratorys rotation system as required) of routine and non-routine genomic and molecular medicine tests/investigations.

To be personally responsible for the time management of multiple tasks as described in the job description and to respond to the changing requirements of laboratory by accommodating additional tasks and responsibilities as required.

To liaise with other members of staff to ensure that reports are authorised within the appropriate target time.

After appropriate training to authorise reports for transmission to clinicians who have requested the test.

To perform a variety of techniques in accordance with the role.

To correctly interpret and report the results of tests. This may include complex statistical analysis or the use of probability calculations to provide a risk estimate.

To undertake clinical liaison in accordance to the laboratory protocols and processes in providing accurate information and advice to authorised service user enquiries.

The ability to work well in a team and be able to communicate effectively with others is of paramount importance. The role is full time, however part time and flexible working arrangements will be considered.
